Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya in the local Lozi language: 'The Smoke That Thunders') sits on the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. At 1,708 metres wide and up to 108 metres deep depending on the season, it is the largest waterfall in the world by combined width and height. The falls are at their most powerful from February to May, when the Zambezi is in full flood — you can hear the roar from 40 kilometres away and see the spray from the air. At their most dramatic, the falls generate a perpetual mist that supports a unique riverine rainforest in the gorge below. From June onward, the water flow decreases and the falls become more defined — individual cascades become visible, and you can walk along the lip of the gorge for unobstructed views.
Logistics

The logistics are simpler than they sound. Your international flight lands at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) near Arusha. After your climb (6-9 days) and safari (3-7 days), you depart from either Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Serengeti's Sasakura Airstrip on a regional flight to Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR), connecting to Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka (LKA) or Livingstone Airport (LVI) near the falls. Ethiopian Airlines and RwandAir operate daily connections via Addis Ababa; South African Airways via Johannesburg. Alternatively, a direct Coastal Aviation flight from the Serengeti to Kilimanjaro Airport connects to the regional network. Total flight time from northern Tanzania to Victoria Falls is approximately 6-8 hours including connections. We handle all internal flight bookings as part of the package.

Victoria Falls is more than a viewpoint — it is an adventure hub. The Zambezi River above the falls offers white-water rafting (grade 5 rapids, considered among the finest in the world), sunset boat cruises, and fly fishing for tigerfish. Above the falls, bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge into the Batoka Gorge is one of the most iconic adrenaline jumps on earth. For a more measured experience, a helicopter or micro-light flight over the falls gives the full perspective — the only way to truly grasp the scale. Livingstone Island, on the lip of the falls on the Zambia side, offers a natural pool (Devil's Pool) swim at low water season (roughly August–January), where you stand in a rocky pool inches from the edge of the falls. The falls can be visited from either the Zambian or Zimbabwean side — both require a visa for that country, but the Victoria Falls Visa allows access to both sides once issued.

The Zimbabwean side (Victoria Falls Town) has the famous Victoria Falls Hotel, wider views of the full cascade, and the Victoria Falls Rainforest trail on the rim. Both sides are accessible with a combined Victoria Falls Visa ($52 for most nationalities). The most complete experience includes visiting both sides — the view from the Zimbabwean rim at sunrise, the adventure activities on the Zambian side. How many days do I need at Victoria Falls after Kilimanjaro and safari?
We recommend a minimum of 2 nights / 3 days at Victoria Falls — enough time for a full-day guided falls visit (both sides), a sunset boat cruise, and one activity (helicopter flight or bungee jump). If you want to include white-water rafting or the Devil's Pool swim, add a third night. The falls are best experienced in the shoulder seasons: June–August for lower water (defined cascades, Devil's Pool accessible) or February–May for peak flood (maximum spray, the 'Smoke That Thunders' effect).
Which is the best time to combine Kilimanjaro with Victoria Falls?
The optimal combined window is June to August. By June, Kilimanjaro's dry season is in full swing (clear skies, firm trails) and Victoria Falls has decent water flow while being past the heaviest flooding. August offers the best Devil's Pool conditions and clear skies. September also works well for Kilimanjaro, though Victoria Falls water levels are noticeably lower. Avoid the long rains (March-May) for the falls — flash floods can close the knife-edge bridge and some activities are suspended.
Do I need a visa for Zambia or Zimbabwe?
Most nationalities need a visa for both Zambia and Zimbabwe. The convenient option is the KAZA UniVisa (also called the Victoria Falls Visa) — a joint visa that covers both countries for $52 USD, available on arrival at both the Zambia and Zimbabwe border crossings. Some nationalities (e.g., US citizens) need separate visas for each country. Your Tanzania visa covers the Kilimanjaro and safari portion. Is Victoria Falls safe?
Yes — the falls area is a well-established tourism hub with a strong security presence. The adventure activities (bungee, rafting, gorge swing) are operated by certified operators with excellent safety records. The one precaution: the Zambezi has crocodiles and hippos in the river below the falls. Never swim outside designated safe areas — your activity operator will brief you on safe swimming zones. The bungee jump, micro-light flights, and helicopter tours are all subject to strict safety regulation.
Can I combine Kilimanjaro, safari, Victoria Falls, and Zanzibar in one trip?
Yes — this is the complete East and Southern Africa circuit. A 21-24 day trip can realistically cover: Kilimanjaro climb (7-9 days) → Northern Circuit safari (4-5 days) → Victoria Falls (2-3 days) → Zanzibar beach extension (4-5 days).
