Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — The World's Most Important Gorilla Habitat
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a 331 square kilometre ancient rainforest in southwest Uganda. It is home to approximately 460 mountain gorillas — roughly half of the world's entire population — distributed across 20 habituated groups available for trekking. Unlike Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, which sits at altitude, Bwindi is lowland tropical forest: humid, dense, and staggeringly biodiverse. The gorilla families here have been habituated over decades. You sit three metres from a silverback, watch juveniles play in the vines, and a mother nurses her infant metres away. It is the most emotionally powerful wildlife encounter you will ever have.
Logistics
Kilimanjaro + Uganda Gorillas | Two East Africa Wonders
The logistics are straightforward. Your international flight lands at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) near Arusha, Tanzania. After your climb (typically 6-9 days), you fly from JRO to Entebbe International Airport (EBB) — a 2-hour flight with Kenya Airways or Ethiopian Airlines via Nairobi. We arrange a private transfer from Entebbe to Bwindi (approximately 8-9 hours by road, or a 45-minute light aircraft flight to Kisoro airstrip). For the gorilla trek, you need one full day. The trek takes 2-6 hours depending on which sector and which gorilla family you are assigned, followed by one hour in their presence. Accommodation near Bwindi ranges from basic guesthouses to luxury lodges like Gorilla Forest Camp and Clouds Mountain Lodge.
The Permit
Gorilla Permits — Uganda's $728 Advantage Over Rwanda
A gorilla trekking permit is required for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Uganda charges $728 USD per person per day — significantly less than Rwanda's $1,560 permit. This lower price, combined with excellent habituated groups and a more varied trekking landscape, makes Uganda the preferred destination for many experienced travellers. There are four Bwindi sectors: Buhoma (north, most accessible), Ruhija (east), Rushaga (south), and Nkuringo (south). Each sector has 2-4 habituated groups. We purchase permits on your behalf and assign you to the sector and group that best matches your fitness and interests. Permits sell out in peak season (June-September, December-February) — we recommend booking 2-4 months in advance.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi requires a different fitness profile than the mountain. The forest is dense, humid, and uneven — thick vegetation, muddy slopes, and no formed trail in places. You do not need to be a climber, but you need good cardio and strong legs. Treks range from 2 hours (relatively flat, close groups) to 6 hours (steep terrain, remote groups). Altitude is not a factor — Bwindi sits at 1,200-2,600m. Unlike Kilimanjaro, you can build fitness in weeks, not months.
