When to time your Serengeti safari
The migration is a 365-day cycle. Here's what you can expect depending on when you travel.
January – March
Calving Season
1.5 million wildebeest drop their calves in the southern Serengeti (Ndutu area). Predator action is extraordinary — lions, cheetah, and hyena hunt the vulnerable newborns. Fewer tourists, intimate wildlife encounters.
April – June
Green Season
The herds move north through the central and western Serengeti. Landscapes are lush and green, photography is spectacular, and prices are lower. Short grass means excellent game viewing.
July – October
River Crossings
The herds reach the northern Serengeti and cross the Mara River — the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth. Thousands drown crossing. Crocodiles wait below. Witnessing a crossing is unforgettable.
