How fit do I need to be for a Kilimanjaro climb?

Best routes

There are no direct flights from Australia to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). All routes involve a connection through the Middle East or Africa. The most popular options are: Etihad via Abu Dhabi, Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. Flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to JRO is typically 18–22 hours including connection.

From Perth, the route via Dubai or Doha is shorter — approximately 16 hours. From Auckland, Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is often the most direct option.

Booking tips

Book your international flights to arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) — not Dar es Salaam. JRO is 45 minutes from Arusha, your base for the climb. Flying into DAR adds a domestic flight or a full day of road travel.

For the Kili + Safari combo, we recommend arriving at JRO in the morning (by 14:00) so you have time to transfer to Arusha, rest, and meet your climbing team. Departures should be evening flights (from 20:00) to maximise your last day's activities. All internal airport transfers are included in our combo packages.

Best time to go — from an Australian perspective

For Australian travellers, the dry season (June–October) coincides with Australian winter — the cooler months at home, making it an ideal escape to the African winter sun. The Christmas–January window is peak season but also coincides with Australian school holidays, making it popular with families. The February–March shoulder season is excellent for value and wildlife, though it is wet season in Tanzania.

Visa and passport requirements for Australian citizens

Tanzania tourist visa

Australian citizens require a visa for Tanzania. The visa on arrival is available at JRO — the process takes 30–90 minutes and costs USD 80. You will need: a passport valid for 6 months beyond your arrival date, proof of yellow fever vaccination if arriving from a yellow fever country, and USD cash for the fee.

You can also apply for an e-visa before departure via the Tanzania Immigration Services website, which can speed up arrival processing. Australian citizens do not require yellow fever vaccination unless arriving from a yellow fever country.

Passport requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of entry into Tanzania. It must have at least two blank pages for the visa stamp and any immigration stamps. If your passport is due to expire within 6 months of your return date, renew it before booking non-refundable travel.

Note: Australian e-passport holders do not require a transit visa for connections through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Doha — but always check current requirements before booking, as policies change.

Travel insurance — critical for Australian travellers

Standard travel insurance policies typically exclude high-altitude mountaineering above 4,000m. Kilimanjaro summit is at 5,895m — well above standard exclusions. Australian travellers need a policy that specifically covers trekking at altitude, emergency helicopter evacuation from the mountain, and medical treatment in Tanzania. Without this, you are personally liable for evacuation costs that can reach AUD 50,000–100,000 or more.

We recommend policies from Australian specialist insurers:Cover-More, Fast Cover, and World Nomads all offer specific high-altitude trekking coverage. Read the Product Disclosure Statement carefully — altitude exclusions are often buried. Budget AUD 250–500 for comprehensive cover for a 2–3 week trip. Your Medicare card does not cover healthcare in Tanzania.

No reciprocal healthcare

Australia has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with Tanzania. You are not covered by Medicare in Tanzania — even in a medical emergency. Full travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is not optional, it is essential.
