Why Canadian travellers choose the Kili + Safari combo

Canada has no domestic safari or major mountain climbing culture equivalent to Kilimanjaro — every Canadian who climbs Kili is making a deliberate, once-in-a-lifetime choice. That same sense of purpose makes adding a Tanzania safari an obvious extension: you have already crossed an ocean and adjusted to a new time zone, so why not complete the East African story with the wildlife chapter?

The flight from Canada to Tanzania is significant — typically 19–24 hours with a connection. Once you have made that journey, adding a safari to your Kili climb costs substantially less than booking them separately. You have already cleared customs, already adjusted to the time zone, and already secured your Tanzania visa. From a logistical standpoint, the combo makes complete sense: one operator handles everything, no handoffs, no brokers.

Canadian travellers consistently report that the safari component after the climb is the perfect decompression. After six days of mountain ascent and one night of summit pushing, there is nothing like watching a lion pride on the Serengeti plains from a game drive vehicle — rather than sitting on a flight home.

Getting there — flights from Canada

Best routes from Canada

There are no direct flights from Canada to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). All routes require a connection through Europe, the Middle East, or Africa. The most popular options are Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (often the shortest total time and best pricing), Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Emirates via Dubai, and Qatar Airways via Doha.

From major Canadian hubs: Air Canada and Ethiopian Airlines operate codeshare flights from Toronto (YYZ) to Addis Ababa, with connections to JRO. From Vancouver (YVR), expect 22–26 hours total travel time. From Toronto, the total journey is typically 19–22 hours. Ethiopian Airlines tends to offer the best value and most convenient connections for Canadian travellers.

Other airlines serving JRO from European hubs include KLM (via Amsterdam), Lufthansa (via Frankfurt), and Swiss (via Zurich). You can also connect through London, Paris, or Nairobi to JRO.

Booking recommendations

Book your international flights to arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) — not Dar es Salaam. JRO is 45 minutes from Arusha, your base for the climb. Flying into DAR adds a domestic flight or a full day of road travel to reach the mountain.

For the Kili + Safari combo, we recommend arriving at JRO in the morning (by 14:00) so you have time to transfer to Arusha, settle in, and meet your climbing team. Departures should be evening flights (from 20:00) to maximise your last day's game drive. All internal airport transfers are included in our combo packages.

Transit visas: If your connection goes through a European country (Schengen area), you may need a Schengen transit visa. Ethiopian Airlines connections via Addis Ababa do not require a transit visa for Canadians. Always verify with your airline before booking.

Consider upgrading to business class for the long-haul segment if your budget allows — the lie-flat seat makes a significant difference on a 19+ hour journey.

Best time to go — from a Canadian perspective

For Canadian travellers, the dry season (June–October) aligns with summer vacation — the most practical time for most Canadian workers and families to travel. The December–January window coincides with the Christmas holiday break, making it peak season. February–March offers exceptional value and wildlife viewing, though it falls outside the typical Canadian vacation window.

June–October

Peak season — optimal wildlife and climbing

Dry season conditions. Great Migration crossings July–September. Clear skies and excellent visibility on the mountain. Peak season pricing — book 6–9 months ahead for best lodge availability.

December–February

Christmas and winter break

School holiday window. Dry season conditions. Peak pricing but excellent weather. Summit success rates are high in January–February due to stable weather patterns.

February–March

Best value — calving season wildlife

Green season. Wildebeest calving in the southern Serengeti is extraordinary. Significantly lower prices and fewer crowds. Some mountain trails are wetter — come prepared.

March–May

Green season — landscapes and birding

Rainy season. Lower prices but muddy mountain trails. Not recommended for first-time climbers without proper gear. Exceptional birding — 400+ species in Tanzania.

Visa and travel documents for Canadians

Tanzania visa for Canadians

Canadian citizens need a visa to enter Tanzania. The e-Visa (visa on arrival) is available for Canadian travellers — you apply online before departure and receive your approved visa within 2–10 business days. The visa costs $104 USD and is valid for up to 90 days (single entry).

To apply for the e-Visa, visit the Tanzania Immigration Services website and submit: passport (valid 6+ months beyond your travel date), passport photo, itinerary confirmation, and proof of yellow fever vaccination if arriving from a yellow fever risk country (Canada is not a risk country, so this is not required for direct flights from Canada).

Tip: Apply for your e-Visa at least 2 weeks before departure. The processing time can occasionally extend beyond the standard 2–3 days during peak season.

Passport requirements

Your Canadian passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned date of entry into Tanzania. Ensure you have at least 2 blank visa pages in your passport for the entry stamp.

Transit countries: Depending on your flight route, you may transit through countries that require a transit visa. Always verify with your airline. For connections through Addis Ababa, Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul, most Canadians do not require a transit visa for short connections (under 24 hours) if staying in the international transit zone.

Canadian-specific considerations

Canadian citizens should also register with the Government of Canada's Registration of Canadians Abroad service before departure. This allows the government to contact you in case of emergency. Learn more at travel.gc.ca.

Travel insurance — critical for Canadian travellers

Your Canadian provincial health card does not cover medical evacuation or treatment in Tanzania. Standard Canadian travel insurance policies often have exclusions for high-altitude activities like Kilimanjaro climbing. This is the single most important preparation item for Canadian Kili + Safari travellers.

Medical and evacuation coverage

Look for policies that explicitly cover: emergency medical treatment in Tanzania, medical evacuation ( helicopter extraction from the mountain can cost $31,200–$104,000 USD ), and repatriation to Canada. Standard travel policies often cap coverage at $104,000–$520,000 CAD for emergency medical — ensure yours has no altitude exclusions.

Trip cancellation and interruption

Climb cancellations due to weather, illness, or other reasons are common on Kilimanjaro. Ensure your policy covers trip interruption at any point during the climb, not just before departure.

High-altitude activity coverage

Many Canadian travel insurance policies specifically exclude climbing above 4,500 metres. Kilimanjaro summit is 5,895 metres. Confirm your policy explicitly covers high-altitude trekking before purchasing.

What to look for in a Canadian policy

Look for Canadian-owned insurers with 24/7 emergency assistance lines in Swahili and English. World Nomads, Manulife, and Travelance all offer policies that can include high-altitude coverage with the right add-ons. Get everything in writing.

Budget in Canadian dollars — what to expect

Most Canadian travellers budget in CAD. Use approximately 1 CAD = 1,100 TZS (Tanzanian Shilling) as a rough guide. The Tanzanian shilling is a cash currency — you will withdraw shillings from ATMs in Arusha. Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted at larger hotels and tour operators, but cash is essential in smaller towns and for tips.

Personal gear and equipment

$312–$832 CAD

Hiking boots, down jacket, sleeping bag, headlamp, daypack

Total estimated budget: From approximately $8,320–$13,520 CAD per person for a standard 10–14 day Kili + Safari combo, depending on package level and travel style. Premium lodges and private extensions will increase this.

Altitude considerations — what Canadian climbers should know

Kilimanjaro's summit stands at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) — higher than any peak in Canada or the continental USA. The highest peaks in Canada (Mount Logan, at 5,959m) and the USA (Denali, at 6,190m) are comparable heights, but the critical difference on Kilimanjaro is the rapid ascent profile: you go from 900m to 5,895m in 5–7 days, giving your body far less time to acclimatise than a typical mountaineering ascent.

Acclimatisation is everything

The single most important factor in summit success is proper acclimatisation. Choose a route with a built-in acclimatisation day (the Machame and Lemosho routes are preferred by most experienced operators). Our 8-day and 10-day itineraries include rest days at strategic altitudes.

High-altitude illness is real

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) affects up to 75% of climbers above 4,000m. Symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, and dizziness. Our guides monitor every climber daily using a pulse oximeter. If AMS symptoms worsen, the only treatment is descent.

Train before you go

Canadian climbers should focus on cardiovascular fitness — hiking with elevation gain, running, cycling, or swimming. Strength training for leg endurance and core stability helps significantly on the summit night ascent. Start a training programme at least 3–4 months before your climb.

No climbing permit above 4,000m without a guide

Tanzania Park regulations require all climbers above 4,000m to be accompanied by a certified guide. Our guides are licensed by the Kilimanjaro National Park and have extensive high-altitude experience. Solo climbers cannot legally summit Kilimanjaro.
