The standard route to Ruaha is a 1.5-hour flight from Dar es Salaam to the park's Msembke Airstrip. After descending Kilimanjaro and spending a night in Arusha, you fly to Ruaha the next morning. Ruaha is a year-round destination. Each season offers a different perspective on one of Africa's largest and most remote parks. The dry season (June-October) offers the most reliable wildlife concentration; the green season (November-May) offers exceptional birding and the chance to see wild dog puppies.

Calving Season — Wild Dog DenningPro tip: The short rains bring green landscapes and newborn animals. This is also when wild dog packs den — the puppies emerge from the den at 3-4 weeks old and the pack becomes more visible and active near den sites. Ruaha's wild dogs are most observable in these months.

Why pair Kilimanjaro with Ruaha specifically — why not the Northern Circuit?
Ruaha is for travellers who have already seen the Northern Circuit or who specifically want a wilder, more remote safari experience. Ruaha National Park — Tanzania's largest park — is the opposite of the classic circuit: genuinely remote, larger in area than the Serengeti, with far fewer visitors, a distinct ecosystem, and one of Africa's largest wild dog populations. If you want to combine Kilimanjaro with a Tanzania safari that most of your friends have not done, Ruaha is the answer. It is also the southern circuit's premier park, making it an ideal combination with the Northern Circuit if you have 3+ weeks.
How do I get to Ruaha from Kilimanjaro?
The standard route is: descend Kilimanjaro (day 7-9 depending on route) → spend a night in Arusha → fly Dar es Salaam to Ruaha Msembke Airstrip (1.5 hours) → game drive to camp. We handle all of these connections. The flight from Dar es Salaam to Ruaha is operated by coastal Aviation or Auric Air — we book this as part of your package. What wildlife can I see in Ruaha?
Ruaha is one of Tanzania's best parks for predator action. The star species is the African wild dog — Ruaha has one of the largest populations in Africa with 100-120 individuals across the park. Lions are abundant and regularly seen. Cheetahs are present though less common. Elephants are present in large numbers (estimated 8,000-10,000 in the park) and are particularly spectacular along the Great Ruaha River in the dry season. The park also has exceptional birding with over 570 species including the iconic Fischer's lovebird, rwenzori nightjar, and numerous raptors.
How long do I need at Ruaha?
A minimum of 2 full game drives (arrival afternoon + full day + departure morning) is recommended for a meaningful Ruaha experience. The park is large and the wildlife is less concentrated than in the Ngorongoro Crater — you need time to explore different areas. Three full days would be better if you want a thorough exploration and a strong chance of wild dog sightings. We recommend a minimum 2-night, 3-day stay. Ruaha can also be combined with Selous Game Reserve or Mikumi National Park for a fuller southern circuit experience.
