How long do I need for the Ngorongoro Crater portion?
A half-day on the crater floor (06:30–12:30) is sufficient for a strong wildlife experience — lions, elephants, hippos, flamingos, and with luck, the black rhino. A full day allows a second circuit of the crater floor, a visit to Lake Magadi for flamingos, and time at the Empakai Crater rim. We recommend a minimum half-day; a full day is better if your schedule allows.
What wildlife can I see on the crater floor?
Ngorongoro Crater is one of the few places in Africa where you can see all Big Five in a single game drive. The crater is home to approximately 25,000 large animals including a dense population of lions (one of the highest pride densities in Africa), many elephants, large buffalo herds, hippos in the Lerai Forest, and a small but stable population of the endangered black rhino. Flamingos crowd the shallow soda lake in the dry season. Cheetahs are present but less common.
Should I do the safari before or after the climb?
After — almost universally. The mountain demands your full physical resources and altitude adaptation. A pre-climb safari leaves you tired before you start the most demanding hike of your life. The post-climb safari is the ideal recovery: warm, low-altitude, physically gentle, and immediately rewarding. Within hours of descending from Kilimanjaro, you can be watching lions on the crater floor.
How much does a Kilimanjaro + Ngorongoro combo cost?
A 9–11 day Kilimanjaro + Ngorongoro combo (7-day Machame climb + 2-day crater safari) starts from $3,952 per person. This includes all park fees, experienced certified guides and porters, all mountain accommodation and meals, crater park fees, private safari guide, and all ground transfers. The 8-day Lemosho + 2-day crater version starts from $4,576 per person. Peak season (July–August and December–January) commands a premium of 10–15%.
Can I combine Ngorongoro with the Serengeti on the same trip?
Yes — and it is the most common safari pairing. The standard Northern Circuit safari from Arusha visits Tarangire (day 1), Serengeti (days 2–3), and Ngorongoro Crater (day 4). This 4-day safari extension added to a Kili climb gives you the complete Tanzania experience. The road transfer from the Serengeti to Ngorongoro is approximately 3 hours through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
