Zanzibar Extension: 2–4 Nights

Zanzibar is a 90-minute flight from Arusha or a short drive to Dar es Salaam followed by a ferry crossing. For most travellers, flying is the better option — faster and more comfortable.

Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and deserves 1–2 nights on its own. Wander through the Sultan's Palace, lose yourself in the spice market, and end an evening with a traditional dhow sunset cruise across the harbour. The architecture is a remarkable blend of Arab, Indian, and Swahili influences — centuries of trade routes condensed into narrow streets and carved wooden doors.

For beach time, head north: Nungwi and Kendwa offer the best resort infrastructure, with prices ranging from $50 to $500 per night and most properties offering half-board. Paje on the east coast is popular with kitesurfers and has a slightly younger scene.

Popular add-ons from any base: a half-day spice tour in Stone Town, a boat trip to Prison Island to see the giant Aldabra tortoises, or a snorkelling excursion to Mnemba Atoll, which has some of the healthiest coral reefs in East Africa.

Arusha and Moshi: Culture, Coffee, and Crater Views

Arusha is Tanzania's safari capital — most Northern Circuit trips begin here — but it also deserves a day or two in its own right. A coffee plantation tour walks you through the process from bean to cup and finishes with a tasting. The Materuni waterfalls hike outside town is a popular half-day excursion through forested hillside to a 70-metre cascade.

Moshi, the smaller town at the foot of Kilimanjaro, has a more intimate feel. The banana plantation tours are genuinely interesting — Tanzania grows dozens of banana varieties, many of them starchy and cooked rather than eaten raw. On clear days you get outstanding views of Kili's peaks from town.

One practical advantage of an Arusha stop: if you are heading home from Kilimanjaro rather than continuing a safari, a night in Arusha before your international flight is far less rushed than departing from Moshi or the mountain roads. Arusha also has the most reliable international airport access in the region.

Coffee Plantation Tour

Accessible introduction to Maasai traditions. Better than an unsolicited village visit — you learn the history without the sales pressure.

Banana Plantation, Moshi

A different side of Tanzanian agriculture. The starchy cooking varieties are genuinely interesting if you care about food and how it grows.

Southern Tanzania: Ruaha and Nyerere (Selous)

Less crowded than the Northern Circuit, the Southern Circuit offers a completely different Tanzania. Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's largest — remote, wild, and home to substantial lion and elephant populations that have been studied long-term by researchers.

Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is the largest protected area in East Africa and one of the few places in Tanzania where walking safaris and boat trips are a primary activity rather than an add-on. The Rufiji River runs through it, and the combination of river, forest, and savanna produces a different wildlife assemblage to anything in the north.

Southern Tanzania requires internal flights from Arusha — roughly 1–1.5 hours. Costs are higher than equivalent Northern Circuit extensions because of the flight logistics, but the pay-off is genuinely remote game viewing with far fewer vehicles.

A triangular routing works particularly well: Arusha to Ruaha (2–3 nights), then Ruaha to Zanzibar (1-hour flight). You complete the loop without backtracking.

Best for

Travellers who have already done the Northern Circuit and want something different; serious wildlife photographers; those who prioritised seclusion over convenience.

Ruaha National Park

Tanzania’s largest park. Exceptional lion and elephant populations, remote, very few vehicles. 2–3 nights ideal.

Nyerere (Selous)

Walking safaris, boat trips on the Rufiji, hippo and crocodile at close range. The most varied wildlife experience in Tanzania.

Getting there

1–1.5 hour flight from Arusha. Ruaha and Nyerere are usually combined in one extension, not separately.
