Crossing Season by Month
July through September is the prime Mara River crossing window. Timing varies by year based on rainfall.
The first Mara River crossings start in early July as the herds move north from the central Serengeti toward the Lamai Wedge and the Mara River in the Northern Serengeti. Crossings are scattered and unpredictable — some days dozens of crossings, other days quiet. This is the starting pistol of the dry season migration.

The crossings at this time are also the most dramatic: larger herds, more predators (large crocodiles await), and dramatic bank stampedes. This is what the Great Migration is famous for.

Combining the Summit with the Crossings
Option A: Climb First, Then Safari
Any Kili route works. After summiting, spend 2–3 nights recovering in Arusha or Moshi, then fly or drive to the Northern Serengeti for late July–September crossings. Lower risk — your climb is done before peak safari season, and you can relax and enjoy the wildlife.
Option B: Safari First, Then Climb
Start your Northern Circuit safari in early July to catch the first crossings, then travel to Moshi or Arusha for a late July–August Kili climb. This requires good fitness going in — but the post-safari adrenaline is a powerful motivator for Uhuru Peak.
Option C: Northern Circuit Route
The Northern Circuit (8–9 days) circles the mountain's north side — the same geographic direction as the Mara River. It is possible to time a Northern Circuit climb to end in late July–early August, aligning perfectly with peak crossings. This is the most seamless Kili + Migration combo option.
Where to Stay
Private conservancies adjacent to the Northern Serengeti — Lemala, Sayari, Mara North, Lamai Wedge — offer exclusive crossing viewing with far fewer vehicles than the public park. A conservancy camp in peak season should be booked 6–9 months ahead.

Can I climb Kilimanjaro and still see the Mara River crossings?
Yes — with careful timing. The Northern Circuit route on Kilimanjaro takes 8–9 days. If you start your climb in late June or early July, you summit around late June–mid-July and can be on safari in the Northern Serengeti by late July or early August — exactly when crossings are most frequent. Alternatively, climb first (any route), then do the Northern Circuit safari in peak season. The key is coordinating the timing with your operator.
Where is the best place to watch the crossings?
The Lamai Wedge and the Mara River banks in the Northern Serengeti offer the most reliable crossing points. Specific hotspots include the Mara River crossings near the Kenyan border, the Lamai Wedge confluence areas, and the Bologonja River. Staying in a private conservancy (Lemala, Sayari, Mara North) gives you far fewer vehicles and more exclusive access to crossing points compared to the public national park.
How long should I spend watching for crossings?
Plan at least 2 full days in the Northern Serengeti/Lamai area during peak season. Crossings are unpredictable — they can happen any time from dawn to dusk, and some days have multiple events while others have none. A 2–3 night stay gives you sufficient probability of witnessing at least one major crossing event.
What is the difference between the Mara River crossings in Tanzania vs Kenya?
Both countries see the same wildebeest migration — the herds cross back and forth between the Serengeti (Tanzania) and the Masai Mara (Kenya) throughout the dry season. The Tanzania crossings in the Northern Serengeti tend to involve larger, less crowded viewing areas and more dramatic terrain. The Kenya Masai Mara crossings are more accessible and can be combined with a different safari experience. For a Kili combo, the Northern Serengeti crossings in Tanzania are the natural pairing.
What if I miss the crossings — is the rest of the safari still worth it?
Absolutely. The Great Migration is not just the crossings — it is also the calving season (January–February), the predator interaction months (March–May), and the dramatic green season landscapes (November–December). Even outside the crossing window, the Northern Serengeti in August and September offers exceptional wildlife density, predator action, and stunning scenery. The crossings are a spectacular bonus, not the only reason to safari in the Northern Circuit.
