Why American travellers choose the Kili + Safari combo
The USA is one of the fastest-growing source markets for Kilimanjaro climbs, and Tanzania offers something genuinely different from anything available domestically. A Kilimanjaro climb is the classic American bucket-list adventure â but combining it with a Tanzania safari means returning home with the full East African experience rather than just the summit.
The long-haul flight from the USA to Tanzania is significant â typically 18â24 hours with a connection. Once you have made that journey, adding a safari to your Kili climb costs substantially less than booking them separately. You have already adjusted to the time zone, you have already cleared customs, and you are already in East Africa. The combo makes logistical and financial sense: one operator handles everything, no handoffs, no brokers.
Most American climbers who complete the Kili + Safari combo describe it as the greatest adventure of their lives â and many have done Alps, Andes, and Cascades. There is simply nothing in the world like climbing Kilimanjaro and then watching lions on the Serengeti plains the next day.
Getting there â flights from the USA
Best routes from the USA
There are no direct flights from the USA to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). All routes involve a connection through Europe, the Middle East, or Africa. The most popular options are: Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (often the shortest total time), Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Emirates via Dubai, and Qatar Airways via Doha.
From the East Coast (New York, Boston, Miami), Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa typically offers the fastest connection â approximately 18 hours total. From the West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle), expect 22â24 hours total with a connection. Flying time from a US gateway to JRO is typically 14â16 hours of flight time plus a 1â3 hour connection.
Booking recommendations
Book your international flights to arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) â not Dar es Salaam. JRO is 45 minutes from Arusha, your base for the climb. Flying into DAR adds a domestic flight or a full day of road travel to reach the mountain.
For the Kili + Safari combo, we recommend arriving at JRO in the morning (by 14:00) so you have time to transfer to Arusha, rest, and meet your climbing team. Departures should be evening flights (from 20:00) to maximise your last day's activities. All internal airport transfers are included in our combo packages.
Consider upgrading your international ticket to business class if your budget allows â the lie-flat seat makes a significant difference on an 18+ hour journey. Most airlines serving JRO from the USA offer business class.
Best time to go â from an American perspective
For American travellers, the dry season (JuneâOctober) coincides with summer vacation â the most popular time for Americans to travel. The DecemberâJanuary window is peak season but also coincides with the Christmas holiday break. The FebruaryâMarch shoulder season offers exceptional value and wildlife, though it is Tanzania's green season.
JuneâOctober
Peak season â optimal wildlife and climbing
Dry season conditions. Great Migration crossings JulyâSeptember. Clear skies and excellent visibility on the mountain. Peak season pricing â book 6â9 months ahead.
DecemberâFebruary
Christmas and winter break
School holiday window. Dry season conditions. Peak pricing but excellent weather. Summit success rates are high in JanuaryâFebruary due to stable weather.
FebruaryâMarch
Best value â calving season wildlife
Green season. Wildebeest calving in the southern Serengeti is extraordinary. Lower prices, fewer crowds. Some mountain trails are wetter.
MarchâMay
Green season â landscapes and birding
Rainy season in Tanzania. Lower prices but muddy mountain trails. Not recommended for first-time climbers. Exceptional birding â 400+ species.
Altitude considerations for American travellers
Kilimanjaro's summit is at 5,895m (19,341ft) â higher than anything in the contiguous USA (Mount Whitney is 4,421m). Altitude affects everyone differently, and there is no way to predict who will struggle. The key is choosing a proper acclimatisation route (we strongly recommend Lemosho or Northern Circuit over Marangu or Rongai) and climbing slowly.
Who is most at risk?
Altitude sickness does not discriminate by fitness level. Elite marathon runners have been evacuated from Kilimanjaro while less fit travellers have summited without difficulty. The single most important factor is how your body responds to altitude â and you cannot know this until you are at altitude.
Americans coming from low-elevation cities (New Orleans, Houston, Miami) may adapt more slowly than those from higher elevation. If you live at altitude (Denver, Boulder, Santa Fe), you may have a slight physiological advantage â but it is not decisive.
How we manage altitude risk
We use only properly acclimatising routes. Our 8-day Lemosho and 9-day Northern Circuit routes are specifically designed for altitude acclimatisation â they add an extra day or two at altitude that dramatically increases summit success rates and reduces altitude sickness risk.
Diamox (acetazolamide) is commonly used by American climbers â we can advise on dosage and timing. Our guides monitor all clients daily for altitude symptoms and will advise if a descent is necessary. There is no shame in turning back: the mountain will always be there.
Visa and passport requirements for US citizens
Tanzania tourist visa
US citizens require a visa for Tanzania. The visa on arrival is available at JRO â the process takes 30â90 minutes at peak times and costs USD 100. You will need: a passport valid for 6 months beyond your arrival date, proof of yellow fever vaccination if arriving from a yellow fever country (not required from the USA), and USD cash for the fee.
You can also apply for an e-visa via the Tanzania Immigration Services portal before departure. The e-visa can speed up arrival processing. We recommend the visa on arrival for most US travellers â it is well-organised and straightforward.
Passport requirements
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of entry into Tanzania. It must have at least two blank pages for the visa stamp. If your passport is close to expiration, renew it before booking â many travellers have been turned away at JRO for passports expiring within 6 months.
US citizens do not need yellow fever vaccination for Tanzania unless arriving from a yellow fever country. However, if you are transiting through Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or Entebbe, check whether your transit country requires yellow fever â transit passengers are sometimes asked for proof.
Travel insurance â essential for US travellers
Standard travel insurance policies typically exclude high-altitude mountaineering above 4,000m. Kilimanjaro summit is at 5,895m â well above standard exclusion thresholds. You need a policy that specifically covers trekking at altitude, emergency helicopter evacuation, and medical treatment in Tanzania.
Without comprehensive adventure travel insurance, you are personally liable for evacuation costs that can reach $31,200â$52,000 or more â helicopter evacuation from the slopes of Kilimanjaro to Nairobi or Arusha is not cheap. This is not theoretical: emergency evacuations happen on Kili every season.
Recommended US-based insurers
- +Battleface â specific trekking cover
- +World Nomads â widely used by US climbers
- +Seven Corners â adventure travel specialists
- +IMG Travel Insurance â trekking add-on available
What your policy must cover
- +Trekking at altitude to 6,000m minimum
- +Emergency helicopter evacuation from altitude
- +Medical treatment in Tanzania
- +Trip cancellation and interruption
- +Evacuation to nearest adequate hospital
Note
Standard US health insurance (including Medicare and Medicaid) does not cover medical evacuation or treatment in Tanzania. Verify your policy covers international emergency medical care before departure. Budget $156â$416 for comprehensive cover for a 2â3 week trip.
