7 Days or 10 Days — Which Kilimanjaro Safari Combo Is Right?
The most common question we get after "which route" is "how many days do I need." The answer is not the same for everyone. A 7-day combo is the minimum viable — a tight, efficient itinerary that rewards the already-fit. A 10-day is the sweet spot: proper acclimatisation on the mountain and a safari that actually lets you breathe.
Here is the honest comparison across the factors that matter: summit probability, safari depth, physical demand, and what you will actually experience on each itinerary.

Which Duration Should You Choose?
Choose 7 Days If:
- You have limited annual leave and cannot extend beyond 7 days
- You are already an experienced high-altitude mountaineer
- You have done multi-day hikes above 3,000m in the past 12 months
- You are visiting during peak season (June–October) when weather is most reliable
- Your fitness level is high and you are comfortable with endurance events
Choose 10 Days If:
- You are a first-time Kilimanjaro climber or first high-altitude experience
- You are over 50 and want the safest possible summit approach
- You want to maximise your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak
- You want a proper safari with 2–3 days across Ngorongoro and the Serengeti
- You are visiting in the green season (November–May) when weather is less predictable
- You want to do the Lemosho route at 8 days — the highest success rate we offer

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 7 days enough for Kilimanjaro and a safari?
It is the minimum viable duration. A 7-day combo gives you a 6-day Machame climb and a one-day Ngorongoro Crater safari. The mountain portion is condensed — fewer days than our recommended 7–8 for Machame — which reduces your summit success probability. If you are fit and have mountaineering experience, it works. If you are a genuine first-timer, the 10-day gives you proper acclimatisation and a more complete safari.
What summit success rate can I expect on the 7-day itinerary?
Approximately 80–85% for a fit first-time climber on the 6-day Machame. The 10-day Machame or 8-day Lemosho pushes that to 90–95%. The difference is acclimatisation time. On the 7-day, you ascend faster and have less opportunity for your body to adjust to altitude. Guides can mitigate some of this risk through careful pacing, but the biology is the biology.
What safari do I get with the 7-day combo?
Ngorongoro Crater only. There is not enough time to reach the Serengeti — the drive is 6–7 hours each way. Ngorongoro delivers exceptional wildlife density: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and hippo in a single morning game drive. You will not feel cheated. However, you will not see the vast open plains of the Serengeti or the migration.
What safari do I get with the 10-day combo?
The 10-day typically combines the Northern Serengeti (for the migration river crossings in season) or Ngorongoro Crater plus the central Serengeti. You get two full safari days minimum, often three. This is the sweet spot: you see real predator action, you have time to find the animals you want, and you are not rushed between locations.
How much does the extra 3 days cost?
The 10-day combo is typically $624–$1,248 more per person than the 7-day, depending on the route and accommodation level. The extra cost covers three additional days of guide, vehicle, park fees, and accommodation. For most travellers, the jump in summit probability, safari depth, and overall experience quality is worth every shilling.
Which season works for each itinerary?
The 7-day works best during the dry season (June–October) when the roads are good and wildlife is concentrated. The 10-day is more flexible — it works in any season. In the green season (November–May), the longer itinerary gives you more optionality to shift days if weather disrupts the mountain schedule.
Is the 10-day Machame the same as the 10-day Lemosho?
No. The 10-day Machame follows the standard Machame itinerary at a comfortable pace — 7 days on the mountain rather than 6. The 10-day Lemosho is 8 days on the mountain with the extended Shira Plateau approach. Lemosho at 8 days has the highest summit success rate of any route we offer because of the exceptional acclimatisation profile.
Which itinerary is better for someone over 50?
The 10-day every time. Age affects how quickly your body acclimatises at altitude more than any other variable. The extra days on the mountain dramatically reduce altitude sickness risk. Combined with a two-day safari minimum on the 10-day, the pace is manageable, the wildlife is extraordinary, and the whole experience is more holiday than endurance test.
