Large herds are still present in the northern Serengeti and Loliondo area in early October. While the iconic Mara River crossing spectacle is over, you can still see enormous concentrations of wildebeest and zebra in Tanzania before they move south. By late October, the herds have mostly crossed into Kenya.

By mid-to-late October, the first short rains have transformed the landscape. The Serengeti turns green, dramatic thunderclouds build over the plains, and newborn antelope appear. Is October a good month to climb Kilimanjaro?
October is a viable but transitional month for Kilimanjaro. The dry season conditions persist in the first half of the month — trails are still dry, skies are still clear. By mid-October, the short rains typically begin, starting with afternoon showers and building gradually. Success rates in early October are still 85–92%; by late October they drops. Our recommendation: climb in the first two weeks of October and you get near-peak conditions with less crowding and lower prices than September. After mid-October, wait until November or December.
Where is the Great Migration in October?
By October, the Great Migration is crossing the Mara River on the Kenyan side (Maasai Mara) or has completed the crossing and is moving south through the western Loliondo area back toward Tanzania. The peak crossing spectacle is effectively over for the Tanzanian side. However, large herds are still present in the northern Serengeti and Loliondo area, and wildlife viewing in the central and western Serengeti remains excellent. October is better for the southern and central Serengeti than for the northern crossing points.
How hot is Tanzania in October?
October is the hottest month of the year in Tanzania — the heat of the long dry season before the short rains arrive. Daytime temperatures on safari reach 30–35C, and in some years the heat becomes oppressive, particularly in the Serengeti's central areas. The first rains (when they arrive) bring relief. For Kilimanjaro, temperatures on the summit remain cold (-15C to -20C), but the lower slopes are warm. Early October (1–15) is more comfortable than late October.

November is a genuine hidden gem month — the short rains have established themselves, the landscape is green and beautiful, prices are at their lowest, and crowds are minimal. If your schedule is flexible and your priority is photography, value, and the green-season landscape, November may be better than October. But November is less reliable for the climb (more rain), while October's first half still offers viable climbing conditions.
