The Gap Days
Arusha Between Kilimanjaro and Safari
You have descended from the mountain. Your safari starts in two days. Here is how to spend the gap days — and why they matter.
The days between your Kilimanjaro descent and your safari departure are not dead time. They are the transition between the most physically demanding experience of your trip and the one that requires the most patience and presence of mind. How you spend them affects how much you will get out of your safari.
Most travellers land in Arusha after the mountain feeling simultaneously exhausted and euphoric. The euphoria tends to fade by evening, when the full weight of the summit day hits. The first priority on that first evening is: food, water, and sleep. Everything else is secondary.
This guide covers what is actually worth doing in Arusha between the mountain and safari — and what to prioritise depending on how much energy you have.
How to think about the gap days
The honest framework: rest on day one, light activity on day two, safari-ready by day three.
Recovery
Day 1 — Arrive and rest
Check in, hot shower, sleep. Eat everything. Drink water constantly. No sightseeing.
Light exploration
Day 2 — Gentle activity
If feeling good: coffee tour, pool, short cultural visit. No full-day activities.
Ready
Day 3 — Safari departure
Early transfer to first safari park. You are recovered, energised, present.

Frequently asked questions
How many days should I spend in Arusha between Kili and safari?
A minimum of one full day in Arusha between your descent and your safari is essential — you need sleep, laundry, reorganisation, and time to shift mental gears from mountain mode to safari mode. Two days is better, especially if your safari involves an early departure from Arusha. The Arusha gap days are not wasted time — they are preparation and recovery days that directly affect the quality of your safari.
Is Arusha worth visiting after climbing Kilimanjaro?
Arusha is not a tourist city in the conventional sense — it does not have world heritage sites or famous landmarks. But it does have a vibrant market district, excellent coffee culture, a thriving cultural tourism scene, and some surprisingly good restaurants. For the post-climb traveller, Arusha functions primarily as a recovery base, but if you have the energy for light activity, the cultural experiences on offer are a genuine bonus.
What should I prioritise in Arusha — rest or sightseeing?
Rest first, always. Your body has just descended from altitude and completed one of the most physically demanding days of your life. Even if you feel fine on the descent, altitude symptoms can emerge 24 hours later. Prioritise sleep, food, hydration, and gentle movement on day one. Sightseeing and cultural activities are better on day two, if you have it.

Can I do the Cultural Heritage Programme in Arusha after Kili?
The Cultural Heritage Programme in Arusha is one of Tanzania's most respected cultural tourism experiences — a cooperative that brings together the Maasai, Iraqw, Hadzabe, and Datoga communities through guided village visits, dance performances, and craft shopping. It is entirely feasible the day after your Kili descent if you are feeling well, and it is an excellent counterpoint to the mountain experience. Inform your operator in advance so the cultural programme can be scheduled around your safari departure time.
What do I do if I feel unwell after descending from Kilimanjaro?
Mild altitude symptoms (headache, fatigue, slight breathlessness) are normal for 24-48 hours after descent. Rest, paracetamol, and hydration usually resolve them. If symptoms persist beyond 48 hours or worsen, inform your hotel staff and contact a doctor — Arusha has several adequate medical facilities. Your safari operator should have an emergency protocol. Do not push yourself into a game drive if you genuinely feel unwell — your safety and your wildlife experience both suffer.
