Age Requirements
What is the minimum age for a safari in Tanzania?
Most Tanzania operators and national parks accept children aged 4 and above for vehicle safaris. This is not a random number — it is the age at which a child can sit safely in a car seat for a full day, tolerate the length of a game drive, and communicate if something is wrong.
The Ngorongoro Crater has stricter rules. Some lodges and camps within the conservation area do not accept children under 4 for crater game drives. Confirm with your operator and the specific camp before booking. See our Ngorongoro Crater guide for lodge-specific policies.
For children under 4, alternatives exist: some lodges in Tarangire and Lake Manyara offer short private game drives that can work. A visit to a Maasai village, a cultural experience in Tanzania, or a day at a lodge with a pool are engaging for all ages. If your child still needs an afternoon nap in the car, a full-day game drive will be difficult for everyone.

Not all Tanzania safari parks are equal for families. Distance between sightings, road quality, length of game drives, and facilities all vary. Here is how the main northern circuit parks rate for family suitability.
Ngorongoro Crater
Minimum age: 4+ (some camps 8+)
Best for families
Wildlife concentrated in 26 km² — short game drives, almost guaranteed Big Five sightings. The world's largest intact caldera is a spectacular setting. Full-day crater game drive is comfortably done with school-age children.

Shorter distances between sightings than the Serengeti, large elephant herds, iconic baobab landscapes, and excellent birdwatching. Less crowded than Ngorongoro and more affordable. One of our most recommended parks for first-time safari families.

Spectacular — best for older kids
The greatest wildlife destination on Earth. But full-day game drives across vast distances are required, roads can be rough, and the scale is overwhelming for very young children. For families with children 8 and above: genuinely unforgettable.

Can kids climb Kilimanjaro too?
Children from age 10 can climb Kilimanjaro with us. The Marangu route — with its hut accommodation, consistent facilities, and 6-day itinerary — is the most family-friendly option. Our guides carry supplemental oxygen and a Gamow bag on all climbs. If altitude symptoms appear, we descend immediately; the safari continues regardless.

Family-friendly accommodation options
Not all safari camps are designed for children. The best family safari camps share a few traits: family rooms or inter-connecting rooms, a pool or outdoor space where children can safely move around, staff who are experienced with young guests, and a location that allows short game drives rather than full-day runs. Safari logistics with children: what you need to know
What vehicle do we use?
All our family safaris use closed Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4s with pop-top roofs. Children remain inside the vehicle at all times during game drives — no walking near wildlife, ever. The pop-top roof gives everyone a standing view for wildlife spotting. Car seats can be fitted for younger children — confirm this when booking. See our ,[object Object], for what to bring.
What about malaria?
All northern circuit parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara) sit below 1,800m altitude where malaria risk is low. We recommend DEET mosquito repellent and long sleeves in the evenings, particularly during the wet season (November–May). Consult your pediatrician or travel clinic for personal advice before departure.
How do children handle full-day game drives?
Most children aged 5 and above handle full-day game drives well — the excitement of wildlife sightings sustains them. We build in stops: a picnic breakfast at a scenic viewpoint, a rest stop at a lodge midday, and flexibility in the itinerary. Bring snacks, a travel pillow, and downloaded entertainment for quiet moments. Our guides are experienced at adjusting the pace for families.
Do kids need their own bags and kit?
Not much — but a few things help: a small personal backpack they can carry (with their own binoculars, snacks, and colouring kit), a journal to record wildlife sightings (it becomes a cherished keepsake), and their own sunscreen. We provide all safari equipment, water, and vehicle safety gear.

Arusha Arrival & Acclimatisation

Tarangire National Park

Lake Manyara Half-Day + Drive to Ngorongoro
Morning game drive in Lake Manyara — tree-climbing lions and flamingo colonies. Lunch at a lodge viewpoint, then drive to the Ngorongoro crater rim (approx. 2 hours). Early dinner and rest before the crater day. See our Lake Manyara guide.
Ngorongoro Crater Full Day
Descend into the crater at dawn for a full game drive on the crater floor. Big Five sightings are near-guaranteed in a single morning. Lunch at a designated picnic site. Serengeti National Park (Central Serengeti)
Drive from Ngorongoro to the central Serengeti (approx. 3 hours). Two days of game drives in the heart of the Serengeti. Morning and afternoon drives, with a relaxed midday at camp. Serengeti to Arusha
Morning game drive on the way out of the Serengeti, then drive back to Arusha. Rest day — spa, pool, and recap dinner. International departure or onward travel.
Departure / Kilimanjaro Add-On
