The Formula
The best time to climb Kilimanjaro and do a safari is not a single month — it is a formula.
Most travellers fixate on July–September and miss that the shoulder seasons offer dramatically different trade-offs. April–May and November deliver lower prices, thinner crowds, and a greener landscape. The trade-offs are real but manageable with the right itinerary.
Shoulder season combos are our most-neglected secret. Operators offer discounts not because the experience is worse — but because demand is lower. The mountain is still there. The wildlife is still there. What changes is everything you pay for to get to them.
Definitions
What Is a Shoulder Season and Why It Matters for Combos
Shoulder seasons are the transition periods between high and low tourism seasons. Tanzania has two: April–May (long rains) and November (short rains). These are the months when operators are hungry for bookings, lodges drop their rates, and the parks thin out noticeably.
Park Fee Savings
Tanzania's park fees are 30% lower in shoulder seasons for Kilimanjaro climbs. Safari parks follow seasonal pricing too — Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Serengeti all charge less during green season months.
Ngorongoro Crowding
Ngorongoro Crater can be up to 60% less crowded in May compared to August. In November you will regularly have the Crater floor almost to yourself — a fundamentally different park experience than the high-season crush.
The Trade-Off
The long rains can make some Kilimanjaro trails muddy — especially on the Machame Route. Some remote Serengeti routes become less accessible due to flooding. This is precisely why operators discount these months: not because the experience is lesser, but because demand is lower.
Long Rains — April to May
April–May: Long Rains, Big Savings, Lush Greenery
April is the wettest month of the year on Kilimanjaro. May improves as the rains begin to taper. Both months share the same core trade-off: you save significantly, you see a greener Tanzania, and you deal with more mud and more unpredictable weather windows.
What the Weather Is Actually Like
On the Mountain
Rain on Kilimanjaro starts at 2,000m and intensifies toward the summit. The rainforest sections — Machame, Lemosho, Northern Circuit — receive significant rainfall. The summit zone is often clear in the early morning before clouds build by mid-morning. Rain is not constant: it typically rains for hours, then breaks for hours. You can still summit.
On Safari
The southern Serengeti is green and lush. Game density remains high. But the western corridor routes become difficult with seasonal flooding. The central and eastern Serengeti remain accessible. Ngorongoro Crater is year-round excellent — the caldera's enclosed ecosystem is largely unaffected by surface rains.
Climb and Safari Considerations
Routes — April
- —Machame: Muddy and slippery in lower sections. Trekking poles strongly recommended. Gaiters essential.
- —Marangu: Least affected — the roofed hut infrastructure means rain is less disruptive to sleep and camp comfort.
- —Northern Circuit: Most affected — some river crossings become unsafe in May. Operators monitor conditions daily.
- —Summit success: Slightly lower than peak (65–75%) but still a real outcome with proper acclimatisation.
Best Safari Parks in April–May
- —Ngorongoro: Year-round, reliable. Wildlife density exceptional.
- —Lake Manyara: Excellent in May. Birdlife at its seasonal peak.
- —Tarangire: Elephant season. Herds concentrated near the Tarangire River.
- —Serengeti: Southern plains green and beautiful. Western corridor marginal. Migration is in the northern Serengeti and Lamai Wedge — not easily accessed from April–May.
Short Rains — November
November: Short Rains, Empty Parks, Perfect Temperature
November is the quietest month for tourism in Tanzania. Brief afternoon thunderstorms — typically 30–60 minutes — are the norm. Mornings are clear and cool. This is one of the best months for the Machame Route: trail dust is down, vegetation is green, temperatures are moderate.
The Weather Pattern
Afternoon thunderstorms, 30–60 minutes, most days. Mornings are clear and crisp. This is a more predictable pattern than the long rains — you can plan around it. Summit attempts should be timed for the pre-dawn hours when the sky is clearest.
Kilimanjaro in November
November is often one of the best months for Machame. Trail dust from the dry season has settled, vegetation is green and lush, temperatures are moderate. The mountain looks its best. Success rates are comparable to October — typically 82–88%.
The Quietest Parks
Ngorongoro in November is a fundamentally different experience from November in December — November is near-empty, December starts filling. Tarangire elephant herds are at their peak. Serengeti is transitioning from the short rains lushness. You will often have Ngorongoro almost to yourself.
Crowd Contrast
Ngorongoro in November vs December is like two different parks. November is near-silent. December starts the high-season influx. If you want Ngorongoro to yourself — November.
Gear Notes
Shoulder Season Packing Additions
Standard Kilimanjaro packing list plus these items that matter specifically in shoulder season conditions:
Rain Jacket with Hood
Not just a shell — summit night can be below zero with rain. A proper waterproof jacket with a working hood is essential kit in April–May. A poncho is not adequate for high-altitude conditions.
Waterproof Hiking Boots
Mud is the main hazard on Machame in shoulder season. Boots with good ankle support and reliable waterproofing (not water-resistant) are essential. Break them in before you arrive — blisters from wet boots are the most common preventable injury.
Dry Bags or Ziplock Compression Sacks
Protect camera gear and electronics inside your daypack. A double system — ziplock inside a dry bag — handles the heaviest rain. Pack a spare set of clothes in a dry bag at the bottom of your kit bag for summit night.
Quick-Dry Clothing
Cotton takes too long to dry in humid shoulder-season conditions. Pack synthetic or merino base layers that wick moisture and dry within hours. This applies to both the climb and the safari — humidity is higher in green season.
Gaiters
Essential for the Machame Route in any shoulder season month. They keep mud and scree out of your boots and dramatically improve traction on slippery trail sections. Not optional — budget $40–80 for a pair before you arrive.
Trekking Poles
Highly recommended for April–May (mud) and useful in November too. Collapse small enough to fit in checked luggage. Ergonomic grips make a significant difference over 7+ days of walking. Rentable in Arusha if you prefer not to travel with them.
The Honest Verdict
Is It Worth It? Shoulder Season Combos, Honestly
If your priority is wildlife photography, uncrowded parks, and lower prices — yes, shoulder season is excellent. Ngorongoro in November is a fundamentally different park than Ngorongoro in August.
If your priority is guaranteed specific wildlife events — river crossings during the Great Migration, the predator concentration at Ndutu calving — stick to high season. The migration in shoulder months is in the northern Serengeti and harder to access.
Value perspective: Shoulder season Kili + Safari combos can be $500–$1,200 cheaper per person than equivalent high-season accommodation. For a couple, that is $1,000–$2,400 saved. The experience is not second-best — it is different and equally valid.
Tanzania in shoulder season is not “second best” — it is a different, equally valid experience at a better price.

Common Questions
Frequently asked about shoulder season combos
Is April or May better for a shoulder season climb?
Late May is generally better than April — the long rains begin tapering off and trail conditions improve noticeably after the first two weeks of May. April sees the heaviest rainfall of the long rains season. If your schedule is flexible, target late May for the best balance of lower prices and improved conditions.
Can I climb Kilimanjaro during the long rains?
Yes — the mountain never officially closes. Success rates in April–May are 65–75%, compared to peak season. The Machame Route gets muddy and slippery; the Marangu Route is least affected because the hut infrastructure keeps you dry at camp. Trekking poles, gaiters, and waterproof boots are essential. Summit attempts in the early morning before clouds build give you the best window.
Which safari parks are best in shoulder season?
Ngorongoro Crater is excellent year-round due to its enclosed ecosystem — wildlife density stays high regardless of rain. Lake Manyara is exceptional in May with birdlife at its peak. Tarangire is reliable for elephant herds throughout the shoulder months. The Serengeti's southern plains are green and beautiful, though the western corridor routes can be difficult due to flooding.
How much can I save booking a shoulder season combo?
Shoulder season Kili + Safari combos are typically $500–$1,200 per person less than equivalent high-season packages. Lodge pricing drops 30–50% in the green season. Tanzania's park fees are 30% lower for Kilimanjaro in shoulder months, and safari park fees also follow seasonal pricing. The total package saving for a couple can easily exceed $2,000.
Is November a better shoulder season than April–May?
November is widely considered the better shoulder season. The short rains are lighter and more predictable than the long rains — brief afternoon thunderstorms typically lasting 30–60 minutes, followed by clear mornings. Trail conditions on Kilimanjaro are often at their best in November: dust from the dry season has settled, vegetation is green, and temperatures are moderate. Ngorongoro and Tarangire are at their quietest.
