Safari jeep watching wildlife with Kilimanjaro in the distance — Tanzania's two greatest experiences

Trip Planning

Safari and Kilimanjaro
Two of Africa's Greatest

Summit the roof of Africa. Watch a lion stalk its prey. In one extraordinary Tanzania trip since 1978.

Tanzania is one of the rare places on Earth where you can summit a peak and watch a lion stalk its prey in the same trip. Mount Kilimanjaro rises 5,895 metres above the African savannah. Below it, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire hold some of the densest wildlife populations left on the planet. Separately, each experience is extraordinary. Together, they form a trip that travellers describe for the rest of their lives. If you are considering combining a Kilimanjaro climb with a safari — or wondering whether it is worth doing both — this guide answers every question.

Why Combine

One Trip, Two of Earth's Greatest Experiences

The Mountain and the Safari Are Fundamentally Different

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a personal journey. It is early mornings, cold nights, the quiet of altitude, and the moment you stand on a glacier at the roof of Africa. It is about what your body can do and what your mind will let you finish. The safari is communal joy. It is a jeep full of people gasping when a lion appears from the tall grass. After the mountain — where everything is internal, solitary, and inward-facing — the safari opens you up again. You have earned this.

Logistics Make It Easy

Tanzania's northern safari circuit and Kilimanjaro start from the same city: Arusha. Most combined itineraries flow from the mountain directly to the parks, with just a night back in Arusha between the two. No additional flights, no long transfers, no logistical complexity. Your international flight already gets you to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), 90 minutes from Arusha.

Altitude Adjustment

After the summit — at 5,895 metres — the safari elevations of 1,200 to 2,400 metres feel almost sea-level comfortable. Your body recalibrates quickly, and the active but gentle pace of game drives is exactly what most climbers need in the days after summit night. The active recovery of a game drive beats resting in a hotel.

Better Value Than Two Separate Trips

Booking a combined climb and safari with one operator means you pay park fees and logistics costs once. You share the cost of transport, Arusha accommodation, and guide time across both experiences. Compared to booking them separately, a combo trip typically saves $300–800 in duplicated costs.

Safari First, or Climb First?

Most travellers do the climb first

After the summit, your body needs gentle activity to recover. Game drives are physically undemanding — you are in a vehicle, moving slowly through landscapes that your guide reads like a book. The safari is the ideal active recovery after the mountain.

There is also a psychological dimension. If you summit first, the safari becomes a reward. If you do the safari first and then head to the mountain, the pressure of the climb can feel heightened. Most of our guests prefer to have the big achievement behind them.

Safari first is also excellent

If you have more time and want to ease into the altitude gradually, doing a short safari first and then heading to the mountain is also an excellent approach. Some guests find the mountain less intimidating after several days in Tanzania. Either order works — the key variable is how many days you have.

How Many Days

How Many Days Do You Need?

Minimum

10 Days

7 days for the climb (Machame or Lemosho route) + 3 days for the safari (Tarangire and Ngorongoro). We do not recommend trying to combine both in fewer than 10 days.

Ideal

12–14 Days

8 days on the mountain, 3–4 days of safari, and a rest day in Arusha between the two. The mountain and the safari both deserve space — 14 days means you are not rushing either experience.

Extended

18–21 Days

9-day Northern Circuit climb, 5-day northern circuit safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire), and a Zanzibar beach extension. For travellers who want the full Tanzania experience.

Where to Safari

Which Safari Parks After Kilimanjaro?

Most popular

Ngorongoro Crater

The most accessible and wildlife-dense option after the mountain. In 2–3 days you can cover the crater floor thoroughly. Rhino sightings here are among the best in Africa. A 2-hour drive from the mountain drop-off point.

Quick add

Tarangire National Park

Known as the elephant park, Tarangire is a 90-minute drive from Arusha. It is excellent for large herds and a more relaxed, crowd-free safari experience. Baobab trees and river systems create a distinctly different landscape from the crater.

Best for wildlife

Serengeti National Park

For travellers with 14+ days total, the Serengeti is worth the extra drive time. The wildlife density in the northern corridor near the Mara River is extraordinary, particularly during the Great Migration (July–October).

What to Expect

Between the Mountain and the Safari

After you descend from the mountain — usually arriving back in Arusha in the early afternoon — plan for one night in a hotel with a hot shower, a proper bed, and a good meal. You will be tired in a way that the safari will quickly revive.

The morning after, your safari guide meets you at breakfast. The transition from mountain mode to safari mode is one of the most satisfying parts of the combined trip. Within an hour of leaving Arusha, you will be watching wildlife.

Your body will feel different after the mountain — lighter, more aware, more present. The wildlife on safari seems to arrive in that frame of mind with particular intensity. Many of our guests say the days after the summit were the best game viewing of their trip.

Is It Right For You

Is This Trip Right For You?

The combined climb and safari works for most people in reasonable health. You do not need to be an athlete — you need to be committed, well-prepared, and willing to listen to your guides. If you are fit enough to climb, you are fit enough for the safari that follows.

One exception: if you are recovering from altitude sickness or injury on the mountain, give yourself an extra day in Arusha before starting the safari. Your guide will advise. The safari will still be there — pace yourself.
