Few words have been spoken at 5,895 metres above sea level. When you propose at the summit of Kilimanjaro — Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa — you are speaking from a place of absolute personal accomplishment. You did not just take a holiday. You trained for months, climbed through five climate zones, slept at altitude, woke before midnight, and walked the final miles in darkness to reach the highest point on the continent. That effort is the backdrop for the question. And the answer feels different too — because it comes at the end of something that tested you both.

Both work — and both are extraordinary. The summit proposal is dramatic: one knee on volcanic rock, the glacier field behind you, the curvature of the Earth visible on the horizon. But altitude makes everything harder — breathing, thinking clearly, and controlling your emotions. Many of our clients who planned summit proposals tell us afterward that the moment felt almost too intense to be fully present in. The post-safari proposal solves this: you descend from the mountain, spend one night in Arusha, then enter the Serengeti. The second evening — sundowners overlooking the plains, the day's accomplishment still warm in your bodies — is perhaps the more romantic setting. We have arranged both and both are deeply moving.

Yes. We can arrange a completely private sundowner setup at a location your guide selects during the safari — away from other vehicles, overlooking the plains, with a champagne setup and a table prepared by your camp team. This requires advance planning — typically two to three weeks notice — so we can coordinate with the camp and ensure the location is accessible and private. This is the most popular proposal arrangement we offer, because it combines the post-summit emotional high with one of the most iconic landscapes on earth.

Discretion is part of our planning. We can separate your itinerary communications — the climbing logistics go to you, and the safari details to your partner, with no indication of a special occasion unless you want that. Your guide on the mountain can be briefed privately to give you space at the summit if that is your chosen moment. For the safari proposal, the camp staff will have everything prepared in advance while you are at dinner or on an afternoon game drive. We have coordinated summit proposals, sundowner proposals, and one particularly dramatic hot air balloon proposal over the Serengeti — all kept secret until the moment.

January to mid-March is the optimal combined window. The weather on the mountain is at its most stable, the trails are relatively quiet after the December rush, and the post-climb safari coincides with the Great Migration calving season in the southern Serengeti — an extraordinary wildlife backdrop for a proposal. February is the most romantic month in Tanzania: perfect weather on Kili, newborn wildebeest on the plains, warm evenings under African stars. June to October works well for the safari element but the mountain is more popular and the routes busier.

A 10-day proposal itinerary (7-day Lemosho climb + 3-day Serengeti safari with private sundowner setup) ranges from $4,680 to $6,760 per person depending on accommodation level. The private sundowner proposal adds approximately $416-$832 to the total trip cost — covering the camp team preparation, champagne, and logistics. Upgrading to luxury lodges throughout brings the per-person cost to $6,760-$8,840. All prices include park fees, guiding, accommodation, meals, and internal flights. International flights, Tanzania visa ($52), tips (~$312-$416), and travel insurance are additional.

Most clients are exhausted on summit night and for 24-36 hours after — but then they feel extraordinary. The post-summit fatigue is real but brief. By the time you reach the Serengeti, typically 48-72 hours after summiting, the worst of the fatigue has passed. The emotional state of most climbers at that point is remarkable — a unique combination of personal triumph, physical recalibration, and emotional openness. Several of our clients who proposed in the Serengeti told us afterward that the post-climb state heightened the moment rather than diminished it. The accomplishment made them both more present, not less.

Yes — and you should, if your plan is to propose at the summit. We advise clients to carry the ring in a waterproof pouch inside their day pack, secured to the inside of the pack with a carabiner. Do not put it in a pocket that could open. Your guide will be briefed privately and will ensure you have space and privacy at the summit. For safari proposals, the ring travels in your main luggage and we coordinate delivery to the camp team in advance.
