July Kilimanjaro
+ Safari Guide
The dry season meets peak wildlife. July is the sweet spot for combining a Kilimanjaro summit with the Great Migration crossings. Here is what you need to know.
July is the best month to combine Kilimanjaro with a Tanzania safari.
The dry season on Kilimanjaro means clear skies, firm trails, and unobstructed summit views. In the Serengeti, the wildebeest herds have reached the northern Lamai Triangle — and the Mara River crossings that draw travellers from around the world are underway. Add in the peak wildlife density on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, and July is the single month where both legs of your Tanzania trip are firing simultaneously.
This guide covers everything: July climbing conditions on Kilimanjaro, the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti, which routes and parks to prioritise, and how to plan a July itinerary that gets the most from both experiences.
Why July
The mountain and the savannah — both at their best
Kilimanjaro: Dry Season
July is mid-dry season — no rain on the mountain, clear skies, and stable footing on all routes. The summit views on clear mornings are unobstructed. Temperature at base: 20–25°C. At summit: -10 to -15°C at night.
Great Migration: River Crossings
The wildebeest herds have moved north into the Lamai Triangle and northern Serengeti. July is when the Mara River crossings begin in earnest — you can watch thousands cross on a single morning from the right vantage point.
Serengeti: Peak Wildlife
The dry season concentrates wildlife around water sources. Lion prides are visible on open plains. Leopards are mobile in short grass. The Ngorongoro Crater floor has exceptional wildlife density.
No Crowds on the Mountain
The Serengeti is busy in July — but Kilimanjaro is less crowded than December/January or August. July sits in a sweet spot: dry enough for ideal climbing conditions, but before the August school-holiday peak.

July Kilimanjaro + Safari FAQ
Is July a good month to climb Kilimanjaro?
July is one of the very best months to climb Kilimanjaro. It is mid-dry season: no rain, clear skies, and stable trail conditions. The summit success rate is highest in June–October. July also sits outside the August school-holiday peak, meaning slightly fewer climbers on the trail.
Can I see the Great Migration in July?
Yes — July is the start of the Great Migration river crossing season. The wildebeest herds are in the northern Serengeti and Lamai Triangle from July, with crossings happening daily through September. Your best chance of witnessing an actual crossing is in the northern Serengeti, accessible from Lamai or a fly camp.
How many days do I need for the safari after Kilimanjaro in July?
A minimum of 3 days covers the essential northern circuit. We recommend 4–5 days if you want to include the Serengeti properly, especially if the Great Migration is your priority. One day on the Ngorongoro Crater is sufficient — it is compact and wildlife-dense. Tarangire can be done as a half-day on the way between Arusha and Ngorongoro.
What is the weather like on Kilimanjaro in July?
July is dry and cold on Kilimanjaro. Daytime temperatures at base (1,800m) are 20–25°C. At camp (4,000m+), nights drop to -10°C to -15°C. At the summit, night temperatures are -15°C to -25°C with wind chill. The Rongai and Northern Circuit routes may see light moisture on the northern slopes — but this does not significantly affect conditions.
Is July crowded on the Serengeti?
July is peak season on the Serengeti — it will be busier than May or November. However, the northern Serengeti and Lamai Triangle have far fewer vehicles than the central Seronera circuit. A private conservancy adjacent to the main park will give you a substantially more exclusive experience, with restricted vehicle numbers and off-road driving permission.
What should I budget for a July Kilimanjaro + safari combo?
A July Kilimanjaro + safari combo starts from $4,368 per person for a 10-day trip (7-day Machame + 3-day safari). Peak-season pricing applies from June through October — this is when accommodation and operator availability are at their tightest. Booking 3–4 months in advance is strongly recommended for July departures.
