Nutritious mountain food on Kilimanjaro — rice, vegetables, and protein prepared by our mountain cook at base camp

Practical Information

Dietary Requirements on Kilimanjaro & Safari

From vegetarian climbers to halal requirements to coeliac dietary needs — what you can eat on the mountain and in camp, and how to prepare.

You Will Eat Well on the Mountain

One of the most common concerns for first-time climbers is whether they will be able to eat properly on Kilimanjaro. The honest answer: yes, and better than you might expect. Mountain food at its best is simple, hearty, and nutritious — rice, pasta, potatoes, eggs, beans, fresh vegetables, bread, porridge, and fruit. Our cook prepares meals three times a day at base camp and carries hot meals up the mountain daily. Even with dietary restrictions, you will be fed well.

The key to a successful dietary experience on Kilimanjaro is communication. Tell us at booking, not on arrival — this gives our cook time to plan menus, source specific ingredients, and brief the crew. Most dietary requirements can be fully accommodated. The more restrictive your diet, the more lead time we need.

On safari, accommodation is significantly better. Luxury camps have trained chefs, menus planned in advance, and the ability to source ingredients specifically for your requirements. Dietary restrictions are far less challenging in a lodge environment than at 4,000 metres on a mountainside.

Practical Tips

How to Prepare for a Dietary-Restricted Kili Climb

Dietary Requirements for Kili + Safari | Veg, Vegan, Halal

Dietary requirements should be communicated at the enquiry stage, not at the pre-departure briefing. This gives us time to plan menus, source ingredients, and brief our cook and camp staff. Most issues with dietary restrictions arise when the kitchen is surprised on arrival.

Dietary Requirements for Kili + Safari | Veg, Vegan, Halal

Mountain food is nutritious but not specialized for athletic performance or specific dietary frameworks. If you follow a restricted diet, bring supplements to fill the gaps: protein powder (vegan or gluten-free as appropriate), electrolyte drinks, and calorie-dense energy bars. These are not available on the mountain.

Dietary Requirements for Kili + Safari | Veg, Vegan, Halal

'Vegan' and 'coeliac disease' are very different in terms of risk. Tell us whether your dietary requirement is a preference or a medical necessity. Coeliac disease requires strict gluten-free protocols; a vegan diet is a preference that our kitchen can accommodate flexibly. The more we know, the better we can prepare.

Keep antihistamines, EpiPens, anti-diarrheals, and any emergency medication in your daypack — not in your checked duffel bag, which travels separately on the mountain. Your guide should know you have them and where they are.

Dietary Requirements for Kili + Safari | Veg, Vegan, Halal

Each camp on your safari itinerary needs to be informed of dietary requirements before your arrival. We pass this information to all camps at booking. The more exclusive the camp, the more accommodating they can be — but even mid-range camps appreciate advance warning of 2 weeks or more.

FAQ

Dietary Questions Answered

Can I get vegetarian food on Kilimanjaro and safari?+
Yes — vegetarian food on Kilimanjaro is standard and well-supported by virtually all operators. The mountain diet is naturally high in carbohydrates (rice, pasta, potatoes, bread) with legumes and vegetables. Our cook is experienced in vegetarian cooking at altitude and can produce varied, nutritious vegetarian meals throughout the climb. Vegetarian climbers do not go hungry on Kili. The key is to notify us at booking so we can plan the menu and ensure adequate vegetarian protein sources (eggs, beans, lentils, cheese if tolerated) are included from the start.
Is vegan food available on a Kilimanjaro climb?+
Yes — vegan food is available, but it requires more planning. A vegan climb is achievable, but you must notify us at booking so our cook can plan a vegan menu that meets your nutritional needs at altitude. The challenges: getting enough calories (vegan meals tend to be less calorie-dense), getting enough protein for muscle recovery, and ensuring sufficient variety to keep morale high over 6-9 days. Our cooks can prepare oats, rice, pasta, vegetables, fruits, nuts, peanut butter, and legumes throughout. We recommend vegan climbers bring supplemental energy bars and a vegan protein powder to supplement camp food.
Can I get halal food on a Kilimanjaro safari?+
Yes — we regularly accommodate halal dietary requirements on Kilimanjaro climbs and safaris. For the mountain portion: the diet is naturally halal in many respects (no pork, no alcohol). We will ensure all meat is sourced as halal and that no alcohol is used in food preparation. For the safari portion: safari camps are experienced in accommodating halal requirements. We will confirm all meat sourcing with each camp in advance. Please notify us at booking so we can communicate requirements to all camps and the mountain crew. There is no extra charge for halal meal preparation.
What about kosher food on Kilimanjaro?+
Kosher food is more challenging to accommodate on Kilimanjaro due to the remote, high-altitude environment. Our operators can accommodate basic kosher requirements — no mixing of meat and dairy, kosher-style food preparation — but cannot guarantee full kosher certification or provide certified kosher meals at altitude. If you require strictly kosher food, we recommend bringing a supply of certified kosher meals (freeze-dried or shelf-stable) that can be prepared with just hot water. Your guide can provide boiling water for these. For the safari portion, most luxury camps can accommodate kosher requirements with advance notice. Discuss this with us at booking so we can plan appropriately.
I am gluten-free or coeliac. Can I climb Kilimanjaro safely?+
Yes — gluten-free climbing is entirely achievable on Kilimanjaro with proper planning. The mountain diet naturally features rice, potatoes, corn, and vegetables as staples, which are all gluten-free. Our cook can prepare gluten-free breakfasts (eggs, oats if tolerated, rice cakes), lunches (rice salads, fresh fruit, nuts), and dinners (grilled proteins, rice, steamed vegetables). The key challenge is cross-contamination in a shared kitchen environment and ensuring your sides don't contain wheat-based thickeners. Notify us at booking so we can plan a dedicated gluten-free menu and communicate requirements to all crew. Bring gluten-free energy bars as a supplement — they are not available on the mountain.
I have a peanut allergy. Is this manageable on Kili?+
Peanut allergy on Kilimanjaro is manageable with proper communication and precautions. We will notify all crew members and ensure peanut products are excluded from your meals entirely. The dining tent and kitchen will be monitored to prevent cross-contamination. Our cook will prepare alternative protein and fat sources (seeds, nut-free energy bars, tahini if tolerated) to replace the peanut-based foods that are common in mountain cooking. Your guide will carry an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) for emergency use. Please bring your own EpiPen and antihistamines and discuss your allergy severity with us at booking.
Do safari camps accommodate special diets as well as the mountain?+
Luxury and mid-range safari camps in Tanzania are generally experienced in accommodating special dietary requirements — far more so than mountain camps. Most have trained chefs who are accustomed to preparing vegetarian, vegan, halal, and gluten-free meals for international guests. The safari camps have more kitchen resources, fresher ingredients, and more menu flexibility than the mountain camps. Communicating your requirements at booking means we can confirm with each camp on your itinerary and ensure the chef is prepared before you arrive. For the safari portion, there is significantly less limitation on what can be prepared.
What happens if I have a reaction or medical issue related to food on the mountain?+
Your guide carries a comprehensive first aid kit and satellite communication for medical emergencies. In the event of a severe allergic reaction or food-related illness, the immediate response protocol is to descend to lower altitude and contact our Arusha base via satellite phone. For less severe reactions, your guide will identify and remove the problematic food from your diet immediately. Our Arusha base can arrange emergency evacuation to Arusha if needed. The most important thing you can do: carry your own antihistamines, EpiPen (if prescribed), and anti-diarrheal medication, and make sure your guide knows your medical history and medication requirements before the climb begins.
