The vast Serengeti plains at dawn — after Kilimanjaro, the safari begins

Safari Planning Guide

Which Safari Parks After Kilimanjaro?

The northern circuit has four main parks. Here is how to choose which ones to visit, based on your interests, time, and what you most want to see.

After the elation and fatigue of reaching the roof of Africa, a different kind of Tanzania awaits. The northern circuit offers four main safari destinations — each with a distinct character, different wildlife, and varying demands on your time. This guide is not a brochure. It is a decision framework. By the end, you should know which parks to prioritise and why.

The Four Northern Parks

Every park, honestly described

The essential add-on

Ngorongoro Crater

Days recommended

1 day minimum, 1.5 days ideal

A collapsed volcanic caldera holding one of the highest densities of wildlife in Africa. Lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, hippos — all...

Best for

  • First safari travellers
  • Rhino seekers
  • Time-limited travellers
  • Wildlife density prioritizers

Key wildlife

  • Black rhino
  • Lions
  • Elephants
  • Buffalo
  • Hippos
  • Flamingos (seasonal)
  • Leopards (excellent density)

Season note

Year-round wildlife destination — the crater's permanent water means animals do not migrate away. Dry season (June–October) offers the best visibility as vegetation thins.

Combines well with

  • +Any Kili route
  • +Serengeti
  • +Tarangire

The main event

Serengeti National Park

Days recommended

2–3 days minimum, 4+ days ideal

The crown jewel of African safaris — 15,000 square kilometres of open plains, riverine forests, and kopjes that have defined the safari imagination...

Best for

  • Great Migration travellers
  • Predator enthusiasts
  • Open plains landscapes
  • Experienced safari-goers

Key wildlife

  • Wildebeest migration
  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Cheetahs
  • Elephants
  • Giraffes
  • Zebras

Season note

Timing determines what you see: calving season (Jan–Feb) in the southern Serengeti, river crossings (Jul–Oct) in the north, resident wildlife year-round in the central Serengeti.

Combines well with

  • +Northern Circuit or Lemosho (logical route)
  • +Ngorongoro
  • +Tarangire

The elephant park

Tarangire National Park

Days recommended

1–2 days

Famous for its enormous elephant herds — the largest in Tanzania — and the iconic silhouettes of ancient baobab trees. Tarangire is a beautiful, qu...

Best for

  • Elephant lovers
  • Photographers
  • Repeat safari-goers
  • Quieter park experience

Key wildlife

  • Elephants (very large herds)
  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Baobab landscapes
  • Birds (500+ species)
  • Coke's hartebeest

Season note

Best in the dry season (June–October) when elephants gather in large herds at the river. Green season (Nov–May) is beautiful — green landscape, fewer vehicles, wildflowers — but wildlife more dispersed.

Combines well with

  • +Any Kili route
  • +Ngorongoro Crater
  • +Lake Manyara

The birding bonus

Lake Manyara National Park

Days recommended

Half day to 1 day

A compact park famous for its flamingo-lined lake, tree-climbing lions, and birdlife. Lake Manyara is often included as a half-day addition to a northern circuit rather than a standalone destination — its 330 square kilometres make it the smallest of Tanzania's northern parks. It is best combined with Tarangire, which is 90 minutes away, or as a gentle introduction to safari for first-timers. The park's groundwater forest is particularly beautiful and supports species not found in the more open parks.

Best for

  • Birders
  • First-time safari-goers
  • Combination with Tarangire
  • Half-day add-on

Key wildlife

  • Flamingos (seasonal)
  • Tree-climbing lions
  • Elephants
  • Hippos
  • Birds (400+ species)

Season note

Best for flamingos in the wet season (Nov–May) when the lake fills. Tree-climbing lions are most reliably spotted in the dry season when they escape to trees for shade.

Combines well with

  • +Tarangire (half-day add-on)
  • +Ngorongoro
  • +Any Kili route

Ngorongoro Crater

The crater is close to Arusha, making it the most efficient safari from a time standpoint. A full day on the crater floor with an expert guide is one of Africa's great wildlife experiences.

Tarangire + Ngorongoro

Tarangire's elephant herds are the largest in Tanzania. Pair with Ngorongoro for a compact 2-day safari that delivers both the elephants and the crater's predator density.

Tarangire + Serengeti

Tarangire's baobab landscapes and elephant herds are photographic gold. The Serengeti adds scale, drama, and predator action. Green season (November–May) offers dramatic skies and birdlife.

Common Questions

Choosing your post-Kili safari

Can I visit the Serengeti directly after Kilimanjaro?

Technically yes, but it requires either a domestic flight or a long drive (6–7 hours from Arusha to the central Serengeti). Most combo itineraries break the journey with an overnight in Ngorongoro, making the drive more manageable. Fly-in options (Arusha to Serengeti in 1.5 hours) make the combination much more comfortable, particularly after the physical exertion of the climb.

How many safari days should I add after Kilimanjaro?

The minimum we recommend is 2 days: Ngorongoro Crater (1 day) plus a second park. For travellers who want to see the Serengeti properly, 3–4 days is ideal. The honest answer depends on how much wildlife variety you want: if Ngorongoro's crater wildlife satisfies you, 2 days is sufficient. If you want to experience the scale and drama of the Serengeti, allow 3–4 days.

Should I do Ngorongoro or the Serengeti — or both?

Both if possible. Ngorongoro and the Serengeti offer fundamentally different wildlife experiences: the crater is concentrated and reliably spectacular; the Serengeti is vast and dramatic with migration dynamics. 3 days minimum covers both — 1 day Ngorongoro, 2 days Serengeti. If you must choose, first-timers should lean toward the Serengeti; experienced safari-goers who have seen the crater may find Ngorongoro redundant.

Is Tarangire worth adding if I am also going to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti?

It depends on your time and interests. Tarangire adds a different character — the baobab landscape and enormous elephant herds are genuinely different from Ngorongoro's crater setting. For photographers or repeat safari-goers, Tarangire is absolutely worth the addition. For first-timers on a tight schedule, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti offer more variety. Tarangire is best as a 1-day add-on between Ngorongoro and Arusha.

What about the southern parks — Ruaha, Selous, Nyerere?

The southern parks (Ruaha, Nyerere National Park, Selous) are extraordinary — wild, remote, dramatically less visited than the northern circuit. They are significantly further from Kilimanjaro (8–10 hours by road from Arusha) and require domestic flights to access efficiently. For a Kili+safari combo, the southern parks are a dedicated trip extension rather than a natural add-on. If you have 10+ days and want genuinely remote Africa, they are extraordinary. For a standard Kili+safari, the northern circuit is the practical choice.

Which parks can I combine in a 5-day safari after Kilimanjaro?

A 5-day safari (comfortable pace) works well as: Day 1: Ngorongoro Crater. Day 2–3: Serengeti (central or western corridor). Day 4: Ngorongoro crater rim or Tarangire. Day 5: Departure. This combination gives you the crater, the Serengeti, and a third park without excessive driving. A rushed 4-day version removes one day from the Serengeti.
