The trade-off is that August is the most popular month on the mountain. Routes like Machame will have more climbers per day than quieter months. If you want more solitude, the Northern Circuit or Lemosho routes offer a less crowded experience while maintaining ideal August conditions.
Can I see the Great Migration in August?
August is peak migration month in the northern Serengeti. The Mara River crossings are at their most dramatic — daily crossings of thousands of wildebeest from July through September. The Lamai Triangle and northern Serengeti are the action zones. August tends to have more crossings per day than July as the herds have fully arrived. Your best viewing is from the banks of the Mara River, accessible on a 4x4 game drive from Lamai lodge or as part of a fly-camping extension.
Is August crowded on the Serengeti?
August is the most visited month in the Serengeti. Expect more vehicles than in shoulder months. However, the northern Serengeti (Lamai Triangle, Kogatende) is still manageable compared to the central Seronera circuit. The density of wildlife in August is so high that the experience remains exceptional even with more vehicles on the roads. A private conservancy adjacent to the park — with off-road driving and night game drives — gives you a substantially more exclusive experience.
What is the weather like on Kilimanjaro in August?
August is dry and cold on Kilimanjaro. Daytime on the mountain is pleasant — 20–27°C at base — but temperatures drop sharply after sunset. At 4,000m and above, nighttime temperatures fall to -15°C to -25°C on the summit night. At base camp (3,700m) expect -5°C to -10°C. The biggest August hazard is actually sun: UV at altitude in dry air is intense. Apply and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours on the trail, even on cloudy mornings.
How far in advance should I book an August Kilimanjaro + safari?
For August departures, you should be booking 4–6 months ahead. This applies to both your mountain operator and your safari camps. August is peak demand for the entire Tanzania tourism industry — not just Kilimanjaro. Ngorongoro Crater descent permits, which are capped daily, can be booked out 6–8 weeks before August departure. The best Lemosho and Northern Circuit operators are fully booked for August by April or May. Last-minute August bookings are possible but your choice of operator and route will be severely limited.
