Why Fly In

Skip the long road. Fly to Kilimanjaro Airport instead.

Most Tanzania itineraries begin with a long drive from Dar es Salaam or Arusha. For a trip that already includes 7 days on a mountain and 4 days of game drives, starting fresh matters. Flying directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) cuts your pre-climb travel time from 6–8 hours to under an hour.

JRO receives daily flights from Nairobi (1 hour 15 minutes), Addis Ababa (3 hours), and Dar es Salaam (1 hour 45 minutes). Precision Air and Kenya Airways operate reliable regional routes. You arrive in the late afternoon, transfer to Arusha, rest, and begin the climb fresh the next morning.

βœ“

Direct flights from Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Dar es Salaam to JRO

βœ“

Arusha is 40 minutes from the airport β€” no long road transfers

Highlight

Light luggage from here β€” everything you need for the climb arrives with your crew.

Day 2 β€” Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Highlight

The first clear view of Kibo's southern face β€” it looks impossibly large.

Day 4 β€” Shira Cave to Barranco Camp

A long day that includes the Lava Tower (4,600m) β€” your key acclimatisation gain. You climb to Lava Tower by mid-morning, eat lunch at altitude, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,900m). This 'climb high, sleep low' profile is the most effective tool against altitude sickness.

Highlight

Lava Tower at 4,600m β€” your highest point of the day and a genuine checkpoint for how your body is handling altitude.

Day 5 β€” Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The Barranco Wall scramble starts Day 5 β€” a 300m hand-over-hand climb that is the most exciting section of any Kili route. After the Wall, the trai...

Highlight

The Barranco Wall at sunrise. You scramble up as the African savanna unfolds below.

Day 6 β€” Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Short, steep, cold. You arrive at Barafu Camp (4,673m) by early afternoon. Guides brief you thoroughly on summit night β€” layered clothing, headlamp...

Highlight

The last hot meal before the summit. The Milky Way above Barafu is worth the trip alone.

Day 7 β€” Summit Night. Uhuru Peak to Mweaki

Depart between 23:00 and 01:00. The climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) takes 6–8 hours. At dawn on the roof of Africa, you look north to Kenya and west i...

Highlight

Standing at Uhuru Peak as the sun rises. The continent spread out below you.

Day 8 β€” Mweaki to Arusha. Recovery.

Descend to the gate, receive your summit certificate, and drive back to Arusha. A hot shower and a real bed await. Rest, sleep, eat well. Your musc...

Highlight

Summit certificate in hand. The mountain is done. The wildlife begins tomorrow.

Day 9 β€” Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is Tanzania's elephant park β€” named for the river that draws enormous herds during the dry season, but excellent year-round. Lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, and some of the largest elephant families in East Africa are guaranteed. The baobab-dotted landscape is unlike any other park.

Highlight

Elephant families crossing the Tarangire River at dusk.

Day 10 β€” Tarangire to Serengeti

Drive to the Serengeti (3–4 hours), entering the world's most famous wildlife park. 15,000 square kilometres of endless plains. Depending on the season, your guide positions you where the Great Migration herds are most active. Even outside migration season, resident lion prides, leopards in acacia trees, and cheetah on open plains make every game drive extraordinary.

Highlight

Wildebeest on the move β€” the sound of thousands on the plains is genuinely primal.

Day 11 β€” Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

Morning game drive in the Serengeti, then drive to Ngorongoro (2–3 hours). Descend into the crater for an afternoon game drive β€” the world's largest intact volcanic caldera has the highest wildlife density in Tanzania. Lion, leopard, elephant, hippo, flamingos, and the endangered black rhino are all regular sightings.

Highlight

Black rhino on the crater floor β€” fewer than 100 remain in Tanzania.

Day 12 β€” Ngorongoro to Arusha. Departure.

After breakfast, drive back to Arusha (2–3 hours). Optional add-on: Zanzibar beach extension. Or connect to your international departure from JRO.

Highlight

Optional Zanzibar extension β€” three days on the Indian Ocean before heading home.

Why Machame

Machame is the right route for a fly-in combo

Machame is known as the "Whiskey Route" β€” slightly more demanding than the Marangu (Coca-Cola) Route, but with significantly better scenery and a substantially higher summit success rate. Its 7-day itinerary provides adequate acclimatisation for most healthy travellers.

For a fly-in trip where your total time is precious, Machame delivers the full Kilimanjaro experience β€” rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and crater rim β€” in a compact, well-paced 7-day window. The 8-day Lemosho is available if you want the maximum summit probability.

Combines naturally with Northern Circuit safari in 12 days

The Safari

The 4-day Northern Circuit β€” Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro

After eight days on the mountain, the Northern Circuit is the ideal antidote. Tarangire's elephants, the Serengeti's plains, and the world's most productive wildlife caldera β€” in three of the best park days in East Africa.

Tarangire National Park

Two full days. Tanzania's elephant park β€” huge herds year-round, lion prides, leopards in riverine forest, and the distinctive baobab landscape.

Highlight

Elephant families crossing the Tarangire River at dusk.

Serengeti National Park

One full day plus partial days on arrival and departure. 15,000 square kilometres of Africa's most iconic wildlife landscape. Great Migration (December–July) or resident prides year-round.

Highlight

Wildebeest on the move β€” the sound of thousands is genuinely primal.

Ngorongoro Crater

Half-day game drive. The world's largest intact volcanic caldera. Highest wildlife density in Tanzania. Black rhino, lion, leopard, elephant, hippo, and flamingos on the lake.

Highlight

Black rhino on the crater floor β€” fewer than 100 remain in Tanzania.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fly directly to Kilimanjaro Airport?+

Yes. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) receives daily flights from Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Dar es Salaam. Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and Precision Air all operate routes to JRO. Flying in is faster, more comfortable, and avoids a 6–8 hour road transfer from Dar es Salaam.

Is the fly-in option worth the extra cost?+

For international travellers, the fly-in saves significant time and reduces travel fatigue before one of the world's most demanding high-altitude climbs. The Machame route fly-in itinerary adds 2 hours at the start instead of 6–8 hours on a road. Most travellers find the cost difference (approximately $83–120 per person for the domestic flight) well worth it.

What makes Machame the right route for a fly-in combo?+

Machame is the second-most popular route after Marangu, with a 7-day itinerary that provides adequate acclimatisation for most travellers. Its scenery is the most varied of any Kili route, and its 7-day profile achieves summit success rates. Combined with a 4-day Northern Circuit safari, the full trip is 12 days β€” ideal for those with a two-week window.

How physically demanding is this trip?+

The climb requires a good baseline fitness level but no technical climbing skills. Summit night is the most demanding element β€” 14–16 hours of walking, much of it at altitude above 4,500m. The safari days are gentle by comparison β€” game drives in a comfortable Land Cruiser, with optional short nature walks.

What is the total price?+

Our 12-day fly-in Machame + Northern Circuit safari is priced from $4,368 per person based on two people sharing. Includes: park fees (Kilimanjaro, Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro), 7-day Machame climb, all camping and mountain meals, all safari accommodation, all ground transfers including JRO airport pickup, private Land Cruiser with professional guide, and airport transfers. Excludes: international flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, tips for crew, and personal climbing gear.

Can I combine fly-in with Lemosho instead of Machame?+

Yes. A fly-in + Lemosho 8-day itinerary is also available and is our preferred option for travellers who want the highest possible summit success rate. The 8-day Lemosho achieves summit rates. Contact us to customise the itinerary.
