Private Transfer (Recommended)
Best for Safari Kilimanjaro clients
Your Safari Kilimanjaro representative meets you in the arrivals hall with a sign. Luggage is loaded, you walk straight to the vehicle, and you are driven directly to your Arusha hotel. No stops, no haggling, no waiting. Included in every Safari Kilimanjaro booking. If your flight is delayed, we track it and adjust pickup time automatically.
Registered Airport Taxi
Available if you have no pre-arrangement
Official taxis operate from the airport rank. Fares to Arusha are not strictly regulated — agree on a price before getting in. Expect to pay TZS 80,000-120,000 or USD 30-50 depending on your negotiation. The ride is direct. Legitimate registered taxis will have a yellow number plate and a taxi sign on the roof. Avoid unmarked vehicles in the car park.
Shared Shuttle
Budget option — less predictable
Shared shuttles run between JRO and Arusha town. They are cheaper but require coordination — you may be asked to wait while other passengers are collected from nearby hotels. Not recommended if you have an early start the following morning or are arriving late. Schedules are not always reliable. Most shuttle services depart when full rather than at a fixed time.
Self-Drive Rental
Suitable for experienced drivers only
International driving licences are accepted in Tanzania. Vehicles are available at the airport from major rental companies. Driving in Tanzania is on the left side of the road. Road conditions on the JRO-Arusha highway are generally good, but driving at night is not recommended for unfamiliar drivers due to pedestrians, cyclists, and animals on the road. A 4WD is required if you plan to do any park driving.

Immigration & Visa
- —Queue at the visa-on-arrival counter (most nationalities: $52, payable in USD cash)
- —Have your passport (valid 6+ months), return flight ticket, and yellow fever certificate ready
- —Immigration officer will stamp your passport and ask about the purpose of your visit
- — Say 'tourism and climbing Kilimanjaro' — this is straightforward and well understood
Baggage Claim & Customs
- —Follow signs to baggage claim — luggage is usually ready within 15-20 minutes of landing
- —If bags are missing, report to the airline desk before leaving the baggage hall
- —Customs declaration: red channel if you have nothing to declare, green if you have nothing to declare
- —No agricultural products need to be declared by tourists in normal circumstances
Currency & Connectivity
- —ATMs are available in the arrivals hall — withdraw TZS 100,000-200,000 for the first few days
- —SIM card desks are in the arrivals hall — Airtel, Vodacom, Tigo all available

Meeting Your Transfer
- —Your Safari Kilimanjaro driver will be in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name
- —If you cannot find them, call the number in your booking confirmation — do not leave the airport without contacting us first
- —Your driver will assist with luggage and escort you to the vehicle
- —The drive to Arusha takes 60-90 minutes — sit back and enjoy the first views of Tanzania
Your First Evening
What Happens After You Arrive in Arusha
After the 60-90 minute drive from JRO, you will arrive at your Arusha hotel. Check in, take a shower, and give yourself time to decompress — you have been travelling for 10-15 hours. This is intentional. The first evening in Arusha is about rest, not action.
Your lead guide will typically visit after dinner for a short informal briefing. This is not a formal presentation — it is a conversation. They will introduce the route, confirm departure logistics for the following morning, and answer any questions that have come up since your booking. Bring your gear list. If anything is missing or uncertain, now is the time to flag it.
Arusha sits at 1,400 metres altitude — your first exposure before the climb takes you to 5,895m. Most people feel the slightly thinner air within the first hour. It is not a problem, but it is real: you may notice a marginally faster heartbeat on stairs, or a slightly heavier breath. This is normal and expected. Drink water, rest, and sleep when you can.
Dinner is included on arrival night at most Arusha hotels we work with. Breakfast is included the following morning before your guide meets you for the formal pre-climb briefing and gear check.
