Tanzania Combo Guide — 2026

Tanzania Combo Trip: Kilimanjaro, Safari, and Zanzibar

Three experiences. One country. No handoffs. Here is how to plan a Kilimanjaro climb, a Tanzania safari, and a Zanzibar beach stay — all in one trip.

No destination delivers three such different worlds in one country. Kilimanjaro at 5,895m — cold, thin, extraordinary. The northern safari circuit — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire. Zanzibar — turquoise water, spice markets, slow evenings after the altitude and the early mornings on the savanna.

This guide covers the logistics of pulling all three together. The planning is not complicated — but the detail matters, and getting the sequence right is the difference between a trip you describe in one breath and one you describe in three.

How Many Days for Each Leg

The minimum feasible for all three is 12 days. The versions that leave you room to breathe is 16–18 days. Anything shorter and you are rushing the mountain — and that is where people get into trouble.

Zanzibar3 days4–5 days5–7 days

Park fees add roughly $60–70 per person per day in the Serengeti and $70 per day in Ngorongoro Crater. Budget $700–$1,100 per person on top of operator quotes.

The Three Legs

⛰️

Kilimanjaro Climb

5–9 days depending on route. Summiting at 5,895m is the hardest thing most people will ever do — and the most rewarding.

🦁

Tanzania Safari

3–6 days in the Northern Circuit: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire. The greatest wildlife density in Africa.

🏝️

Zanzibar Beach

3–7 days on the island. Stone Town, spice markets, and some of the clearest water in the Indian Ocean.

Kilimanjaro: Which Route, How Many Days

The route determines more than scenery — it determines your acclimatisation profile and your summit success probability. For a combo trip, avoid anything shorter than 6 days.

Rongai (7–8 days)

Recommended for combo trips.

Approaches from the north, quieter than the southern routes. Steady gradient. Good acclimatisation on a slow ascent. Works well before a safari because you arrive at camp already altitude-acclimatised.

Lemosho (7–9 days)

Best scenery for the effort.

The scenic route through the Shira plateau. Excellent acclimatisation profile. The preferred route for travellers who want the full experience without the crowds of Machame.

Northern Circuit (9 days)

Highest summit probability.

The newest route, and the only one that circumnavigates the entire mountain. The longest by far. The best acclimatisation. The highest summit success rate of any route.

Marangu (5–6 days)

Avoid for combo trips.

The only route with dormitory huts. Faster ascent profile, lower summit success. Only worth considering if your schedule genuinely cannot accommodate anything longer.

Safari: Which Parks, How Many Days

The northern circuit covers three parks in a logical loop. You do not need all three — two makes a complete safari. The mix that works best for a post-Kilimanjaro trip prioritises recovery while still delivering the Big Five.

Serengeti (2–3 days)

The centrepiece. The great migration (roughly July–October in the north, January–March in the south). Even outside migration season, the resident lion and leopard populations are among the densest in Africa.

Ngorongoro Crater (1 day)

A collapsed volcano with the highest predator density in Tanzania. Compact enough to see the Big Five in a single game drive. The floor is only 19km across — unlike the open Serengeti, you are almost always close to wildlife.

Tarangire (1 day)

The elephant park. Massive herds in the dry season (June–October). Less crowded than the Serengeti and a good contrast when paired with Ngorongoro. Good for birdlife year-round.

Minimum combo after Kilimanjaro: 2 days Serengeti + 1 day Ngorongoro. Add Tarangire if you have 4+ safari days total.

Zanzibar: How Many Days, What to Do

Zanzibar after Kilimanjaro is not a luxury — it is a recovery protocol. Your legs ache, your skin is wind-burned, and you have not slept properly in a week. Zanzibar at this point in the trip feels earned.

Stone Town

1 day

The UNESCO old town. A full morning exploring the Sultan's Palace, the Old Fort, and the street markets is enough. Food: the seafood street stalls near the waterfront.

Nungwi / Kendwa

2–4 days

The northern beaches. The clearest water, the best snorkelling off Mnemba Atoll, the liveliest evening restaurants. Wide sand, soft and safe for swimming.

Paje / Jambiani

2–3 days

The southeast coast. Kite surfing in season (November–March), quieter, more backpacker-friendly. Good for a slower pace.

Mnemba Island

Day trip

One of the best snorkelling spots in East Africa. A 30-minute boat ride from Nungwi. Book through your hotel — it fills up fast in peak season.

Minimum Zanzibar stay: 3 full days. Covers one day Stone Town, one day beach, one day travel decompression. 5 nights is the sweet spot.

The Two Main Sequences

Recommended

Kili → Safari → Zanzibar

Climb first, safari second, beach last. This is the logical flow because you are freshest on the mountain. Summit day requires your full physical capacity. Safari after the mountain is genuinely enjoyable — you have earned the rest in a Land Cruiser. Zanzibar is the reward at the end.

Typical: Arusha → Kili (days 1–9) → Safari (days 10–14) → Zanzibar (days 15–18) → Fly home.

Valid alternative

Safari → Kili → Zanzibar

Some travellers want the safari as the highlight and are less fussed about the summit. Others have limited annual leave and want to front-load the wildlife. This sequence works if you are honest about summit expectations — safari fatigue makes the summit push harder.

Not recommended without excellent fitness. Only consider if summit day is secondary to the overall experience.

What the Transitions Actually Look Like

Mountain to Safari

Most travellers fly from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) to the Serengeti airstrip. The transfer from mountain to airport takes about 90 minutes from Arusha. Domestic flights to the Serengeti are roughly 2 hours.

Your safari operator coordinates the pickup at the airstrip — no additional logistics required if you book through one operator.

Safari to Zanzibar

Most travellers fly from the Serengeti or Lake Manyara airstrip to Zanzibar via Dar es Salaam, or directly on some routes. The coastal ferry from Dar to Zanzibar is an alternative — about 2 hours across the channel.

Build a half-day buffer between safari end and Zanzibar arrival. Delayed safari pickups happen — same-day connections are risky.

Getting to the Mountain

International flights land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), 45 minutes from Arusha. Arusha is the basecamp town for all Kili climbs — you spend the night before and the night after the climb here.

Book an extra night in Arusha on arrival. Long-haul flights almost always arrive in the evening — starting a climb the next morning after an overnight flight is not ideal.
