A safari Kilimanjaro combo is the smartest way to do Tanzania in a single trip. You stand on the roof of Africa at sunrise, then within a few days you are watching lions hunt on the Serengeti plains — same operator, same family team, no handoffs, no rebooking. We have been running this combination out of Arusha since 1978, and the itinerary below is the version we send to most of our guests.
The combo works because the geography works. Kilimanjaro's base, Arusha, is four hours from the Serengeti, two hours from Tarangire, and three hours from the Ngorongoro Crater rim. You are already in the safari capital of East Africa the moment you step off the plane. The only question is how long you want to spend in each half of the trip.

The 10-Day Safari Kilimanjaro Combo Itinerary
The minimum viable combination. Seven days on the Machame Route, one rest day in Arusha, and two safari days in Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater. This is the itinerary to use if your holiday window is tight.
Day 1 · Arrive in Arusha
Land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Your driver transfers you 45 minutes into Arusha, the safari capital of northern Tanzania, sitting at 1,400 metres. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and doing a gear check with your climbing team. A light Swahili dinner and an early night is the ideal preparation for the mountain.
Day 2 · Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Drive two hours from Arusha to Machame Gate at 1,800 metres, register, and begin the climb through the montane rainforest. Six hours of steady walking brings you to Machame Camp at 3,000 metres. Colobus monkeys in the canopy, the smell of wet moss, and the first real sense that you are on Kilimanjaro.
Day 3 · Machame Camp to Shira Camp 2
Out of the rainforest and into the heather and moorland zone. The path climbs steadily to Shira Camp 2 at 3,900 metres on the Shira Plateau. The air is noticeably thinner. Walk at conversation pace and drink more water than you think you need.
Day 4 · Shira to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
The classic climb-high, sleep-low acclimatisation day. Ascend to Lava Tower at 4,600 metres for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960 metres. The Barranco Wall looms over camp — you will climb it tomorrow morning.
Day 5 · Barranco to Karanga Camp
Up the Barranco Wall (a 300-metre scramble, not technical) and across the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp at 3,995 metres. A shorter day designed for recovery before the summit push.
Day 6 · Karanga to Barafu Camp
A steady climb into the alpine desert zone brings you to Barafu Camp at 4,673 metres. The afternoon is for rest, hydration, and a final summit brief. Early dinner. Sleep by 7 PM. The summit push starts at midnight.
Day 7 · Summit Day — Uhuru Peak, Then Mweka Camp
Midnight departure. Five to seven hours in darkness to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then a further 45 minutes to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Sunrise over the curving horizon. Descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp at 3,100 metres. The mountain is done.
Day 8 · Descend to Mweka Gate — Rest Day in Arusha
Final three-hour descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate, drive back to Arusha, check into a proper hotel, take a long shower, and eat a real meal. This rest day is the most underrated day of any combo. Your body needs it before the early-morning game drives begin.
Day 9 · Tarangire National Park
Drive one hour from Arusha to Tarangire, known for large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and exceptional dry-season birdlife. A full day of game drives with a picnic lunch. Return to Arusha in the late afternoon.
Day 10 · Ngorongoro Crater — Departure
Drive two hours to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the crater — the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and the most reliable place in Africa to see the Big Five in a single day. Lunch on the crater floor, ascend in the afternoon, and transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for your evening flight, or extend to a beach add-on in Zanzibar.
The 14-Day Option (Most Popular)
If you can stretch the trip to 14 days, the itinerary changes meaningfully. You take the 8-day Lemosho Route instead of the 6-day Machame, which adds an acclimatisation day on the Shira Plateau and lifts the summit success rate above 95 percent. You also gain a third safari day, which is the difference between a rushed Ngorongoro visit and a proper three-park experience.
The 14-day version usually runs Tarangire, the central Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater — the three parks that together cover the Big Five with very high reliability. You can also add a half-day at Lake Manyara for the tree-climbing lions, which is a 90-minute detour from Arusha.
The 21-Day Grand Tanzania
For travellers with three weeks and the appetite for it, the 21-day version adds the southern parks — Ruaha and Selous (Nyerere) — plus a Zanzibar beach extension at the end. This is the only version that genuinely covers the whole of Tanzania's wildlife geography, from the northern migration corridor to the wild, lightly-visited southern reserves.
The order is always climb first, then safari, then beach. Trying to compress a 21-day itinerary into 14 days usually means dropping one safari park or rushing the acclimatisation — neither is a trade worth making.
Best Time to Book a Safari Kilimanjaro Combo
The dry seasons are the strongest windows. June through October is the main dry season — the safari is at its best, the migration is in the northern Serengeti, and the climb is in its most popular period. January and February is the secondary dry window, with fewer climbers on the mountain and a quieter safari.
March, April, May, and November are the rainy seasons. The trails are slippery, the mountain cloud cover is heavier, and safari sightings are slightly less reliable. We still run combos in those months for travellers who want quieter conditions, but the experience is different.
Safari Kilimanjaro Combo Cost (2026)
Our 10-day combo starts at $3,952 per person for a private two-person departure. The 14-day version starts at $5,096 per person. The 21-day Grand Tanzania starts at $7,488 per person. All prices include park fees, accommodation, meals on the mountain, a private 4x4 Land Cruiser on safari, and a professional guide throughout. International flights, visas, and personal climbing gear are not included.
Our prices are for private departures. Budget operators advertising lower rates are usually quoting group-joining safaris where you share a vehicle with six to ten other travellers on a fixed itinerary. The two products are different — read the fine print before you compare.
Why Book a Combo With One Operator
The practical reason is logistics. Your climbing team hands you directly to your safari guide at the Mweka Gate or your Arusha hotel. No rebooking. No transfer arrangements. No third-party brokers taking a margin. One deposit, one point of contact, one family team responsible for the whole trip.
The financial reason is that the combo price is typically 10 to 15 percent lower than booking the climb and the safari separately with two different operators, because we share the Arusha base, the vehicle fleet, and the guide team across the same trip. The convenience reason is that you spend your energy on the mountain and the safari — not on logistics.
