7 Days in Tanzania: The Honest Kilimanjaro Safari Itinerary

May 2026 Β· 12 min read

Seven days in Tanzania sounds like a lot until you start mapping it out. Kilimanjaro is five mountain days minimum. The Serengeti is four hours from Arusha. Zanzibar is a flight and a half away. The truth is that one week is enough β€” but only if you choose what you are doing before you start planning. This guide gives you three honest options, with no filler itineraries that would exhaust anyone.

Is 7 Days Enough for Tanzania?

The honest answer: it depends entirely on what you came for. If your goal is to summit Kilimanjaro, seven days is tight but workable β€” the Marangu route at five days fits neatly. If your goal is to see wildlife, seven days lets you cover two or three parks properly. If you want both in the same week, seven days forces compromises that you should know about before you book.

The main constraint is not physical β€” it is logistical. Tanzania is roughly the size of France. The distance from Kilimanjaro Airport to the Serengeti is 320 kilometres and takes four to five hours by road. Zanzibar requires a flight. Each itinerary option below makes different trade-offs. None of them is wrong. They are just different trips.

The one non-negotiable: however you spend your seven days, build in a rest day after the summit before any physically demanding activity. The mountain does not negotiate.

Option A β€” Seven Days Climbing Kilimanjaro Only

If your goal is the summit and everything else is secondary, seven days on Kilimanjaro is a good trip. You will climb the Marangu route β€” the only established path that fits five mountain days comfortably. The huts mean no tent camping, which matters when your days are already long.

Marangu is sometimes called the "Coca-Cola route" because of the manned huts and established infrastructure. It is the most comfortable short option. The acclimatisation profile is tight on the five-day version β€” you gain altitude faster than the body ideally likes β€” which is why we recommend the six-day extension when possible. On five days, summit success runs around 76%.

Option A β€” Day by Day

Day 1

Arrive in Arusha

Land at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), transfer to Arusha. Gear check at our office. Overnight at an Arusha lodge. No climbing β€” just altitude acclimatisation at 1,400m.

Day 2

Marangu Gate β†’ Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Drive to Marangu Gate. Registration and porterεˆ†ι…. Trek through farmland and rainforest. Colobus monkeys common. 4–5 hours to Mandara Hut. Hot showers available.

Day 3

Mandara Hut β†’ Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Moorland terrain, first views of Kibo peak. Acclimatisation is the priority β€” your body is learning to function on thinner air. 5–6 hours steady climbing.

Day 4

Horombo Hut β†’ Kibo Hut (4,700m)

The longest day. Alpine desert terrain, bare and rocky. The air thins noticeably. You are climbing toward the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. 6–8 hours.

Day 5

Summit Night β€” Uhuru Peak (5,895m)

Wake at 11pm. Headlamp climb. Gilman's Point (5,685m) in 6–7 hours. Then 1–2 hours along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Horombo Hut or push on to Mandara.

Day 6

Descend to Marangu Gate β†’ Arusha

Continue descent to Marangu Gate. Our vehicle transfers you back to Arusha. Rest, hot shower, proper meal. Your legs will be very aware of the 4,000 vertical metres you just descended.

Day 7

Depart or Extend

Fly home or add a Zanzibar extension, a safari day, or a rest day in Arusha. Most climbers who add anything choose a Ngorongoro Crater day trip β€” it is close to Arusha and does not require much fitness.

What Option A gets right

  • β€” Maximum time and energy focused on the summit objective
  • β€” Marangu huts mean no tent camping β€” cleaner, drier, easier on a short trip
  • β€” Experienced guides and a proven five-day route with proper safety protocols
  • β€” Arusha transfer on Day 6 means you are back in civilisation before flying out

What Option A sacrifices

  • β€” No wildlife experience in one of the most biodiverse countries on earth
  • β€” Five-day Marangu has a lower summit rate than longer routes
  • β€” Compressed acclimatisation means altitude illness is more likely

Option B β€” 4-Day Acclimatisation Climb + 3-Day Safari

This is the most popular seven-day combination β€” and the one most operators will try to sell you. The logic is sound: four days of acclimatisation on Kilimanjaro (Machame or Rongai) followed by three days of safari covering Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. It covers both bucket-list items in one week.

The problem: four days is not enough for a safe Kilimanjaro climb by any established route. Machame needs six. Rongai needs six. What you are actually buying with "four days" is a four-day altitude hike that peaks around 3,700 metres β€” well below the summit β€” followed by a safari. This is a fine trip. It is just not a Kilimanjaro summit trip.

Be honest with yourself before choosing Option B

If your goal is to summit Kilimanjaro, four days on the mountain will disappoint you. The Rongai route at four days takes you to Rongai Camp (3,050m) and back β€” a scenic hike with good wildlife, not a summit attempt. If summit is the goal, choose Option A (Marangu 5 days) and add a safari day instead.

If the goal is a meaningful Tanzania experience that includes the mountain environment and wildlife, Option B works. The four-day Rongai is a beautiful approach β€” it comes in from the north, through farmland, with views of Kilimanjaro from a different angle than Machame. The safari portion covers Ngorongoro Crater (wildlife density unmatched anywhere in Africa) and Tarangire (elephants and baobabs).

Option B β€” Day by Day

Day 1

Arrive in Arusha

Land at JRO, transfer to Arusha. Gear check and briefing. Overnight Arusha lodge. Acclimatise to 1,400m altitude.

Day 2

Rongai Gate (1,950m) β†’ Rongai Camp (3,050m)

Drive 3–4 hours to Rongai Gate on the northern slopes. Trek through farmland and forest. 4–5 hours to Rongai Camp. Excellent views of Kilimanjaro's north face.僧

Day 3

Rongai Camp β†’ Second Cave Camp (3,400m)

Steady climb through moorland. Kibo peak comes into full view. 4–5 hours. Altitude is noticeable β€” keep drinking water, keep moving.

Day 4

Second Cave Camp β†’ Simba Camp (3,700m) β†’ Descend

Morning ascent to Simba Camp (the 4-day high point). Descend back to Rongai Gate and drive to Arusha. Arrive mid-afternoon. Rest and prepare for safari.

Day 5

Arusha β†’ Ngorongoro Crater

Drive 3.5 hours to Ngorongoro. Descend into the crater at dawn β€” 6,000 feet of wildlife density into a self-contained caldera. Lions, elephants, hippos, flamingos, and usually black rhino. 5–6 hours of game drives. Overnight on the crater rim.

Day 6

Ngorongoro β†’ Tarangire National Park

Morning game drive on Ngorongoro floor (optional second descent). Then drive 2 hours to Tarangire. Afternoon game drive through ancient baobab country and elephant herds. Tarangire is quieter than Ngorongoro β€” more intimate wildlife viewing. Overnight outside the park.

Day 7

Tarangire Morning Drive β†’ Arusha β†’ Depart

One final game drive in Tarangire at sunrise β€” when predators are most active and elephants gather at the river. Mid-morning transfer back to Arusha. Fly home from JRO, or continue to Zanzibar.

What Option B gets right

  • β€” Both iconic Tanzania experiences in a single week
  • β€” Rongai approach is scenic, less crowded than other routes, and culturally interesting
  • β€” Ngorongoro Crater is the most productive single-day wildlife experience on earth
  • β€” Tarangire adds elephant density and a different landscape from Ngorongoro
  • β€” One operator handles both components β€” no handoff between mountain and safari companies

What Option B sacrifices

  • β€” No summit. If Kilimanjaro is the goal, this itinerary does not deliver it.
  • β€” Full-day safaris after mountain exertion β€” fitness is adequate but not optimal
  • β€” No Serengeti. Three days cannot cover Ngorongoro, Tarangire, AND the Serengeti. You are choosing density over scale.

Option C β€” Safari + Zanzibar Beach Extension

Some travellers arrive in Tanzania not for the summit but for the full arc: wildlife on the savanna, then rest on an Indian Ocean island. This itinerary puts the safari first β€” Arusha to Ngorongoro to the Serengeti β€” followed by a Zanzibar beach extension. It suits travellers with a wildlife priority and a rest-day requirement.

The sequence matters: safari first means your fitness is fresh for game drives (which involve early mornings and long days in a vehicle), and the Zanzibar beach at the end gives you somewhere to decompress after the safari intensity. Flying from Kilimanjaro Airport to Zanzibar takes 90 minutes and departs twice daily.

Option C β€” Day by Day

Day 1

Arrive in Arusha

Land at JRO, transfer to Arusha. Briefing on the safari itinerary. Overnight Arusha lodge.

Day 2

Arusha β†’ Ngorongoro Crater

Drive to Ngorongoro. Dawn descent into the crater for a full morning of game drives. 6,000 feet of wildlife in a self-contained caldera. Often the highlight of a Tanzania trip. Overnight crater rim.

Day 3

Ngorongoro β†’ Serengeti National Park

Drive 3–4 hours into the Serengeti. Afternoon game drive on arrival. The endless plains reward first-time visitors in a way that no photograph fully captures. Big cats are the primary draw β€” lions, leopards, and cheetahs are regularly sighted. Overnight Serengeti camp.

Day 4

Serengeti Full Day

One full day in the Serengeti. Dawn game drive when predators are most active. Midday rest at camp (the heat is real β€” animals and people alike rest from 11am to 3pm). Afternoon game drive to catch the evening wildlife movement. Second night in the Serengeti.

Day 5

Serengeti β†’ Zanzibar

Morning game drive, then transfer to Seronera Airstrip for a flight to Zanzibar (90 minutes, $120–$200 per person, booked through our office). Land in Stone Town and transfer to your beach resort on the north coast. Afternoon and evening at leisure.

Day 6

Zanzibar Beach Day

Full day on Nungwi or Kendwa beach. Snorkelling, diving, dhow sailing, or simply rest. The Indian Ocean is warm year-round (26–29Β°C). Stone Town historic tour is available if you prefer culture to beach.

Day 7

Zanzibar β†’ Depart

Final morning on the beach or an early spice market walk in Stone Town. Transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your outbound flight.

What Option C gets right

  • β€” Serengeti is the defining African safari experience β€” Option C gives it two full days
  • β€” Ngorongoro Crater on Day 2 sets the wildlife standard before the Serengeti raises it
  • β€” Zanzibar extension provides genuine rest β€” warm water, good food, no alarm clocks
  • β€” Safari first means you are fresh for game drives when they matter most

What Option C sacrifices

  • β€” No Kilimanjaro component at all β€” this is a pure safari-beach itinerary
  • β€” If you are physically capable of the mountain and you skip it, you have left the main objective off the trip
  • β€” Zanzibar adds flight cost and transfer time (90-minute flight + 60-minute transfer to north coast beaches)
